When we talk about Women's History Month, we tend to look backwards, celebrating women who broke barriers decades ago, who paved the way, who made it possible for us to be here, and that's important. We should honor them. But what about the women making history right now? The ones building empires whilst everyone's still writing think pieces about "the future of African business"? The ones who didn't wait for permission, didn't wait for funding, didn't wait for the system to include them and just built their own?

This isn't your typical "inspiring women" list. We're not doing the trauma porn ("she overcame so much!") or the humility performance ("she's powerful but also so humble!"). This is about women who are unapologetically ambitious, strategically brilliant, and building generational wealth, not just businesses, but legacy.

These five women aren't waiting for Western media to validate them. They're not on Forbes 30 Under 30, hoping for venture capital from Silicon Valley. They're building empires in Africa, for Africa, often outside traditional structures because they were never given access in the first place. So for Women's History Month, let's talk about the women building history right now. The ones whose names you should know. The ones changing entire industries whilst everyone else is still asking if African women can lead. Here are five women proving they already are:&nbsp;

Bethlehem Tilahun Alemu didn't set out to become one of Africa's most successful entrepreneurs. She set out to solve a problem in her community. In 2005, she was living in Zenebework, a small area in Addis Ababa where skilled artisans were chronically unemployed despite having incredible talent. She saw people with the ability to create beautiful things but no platform to showcase their work, no access to markets, no way to turn their skills into sustainable income. So she built one.

soleRebels started in a workshop on her grandmother's plot of land. The concept was simple but revolutionary, take traditional Ethiopian footwear (the seleate, made with recycled tire soles) and turn it into a global brand. Sustainable before sustainability was trendy. Ethical before "ethical fashion" became a marketing buzzword. The shoes are handmade, the soles crafted from recycled car tires, the designs rooted in Ethiopian tradition but modern enough to sell at Whole Foods, Urban Outfitters, and Amazon. By 2016, the company was selling 125,000 pairs of shoes annually and had created 1,200 jobs.

But Bethlehem didn't stop there. She launched The Republic of Leather, a luxury leather goods brand built on the same principles, ecological sustainability, economic empowerment, customer choice. Then came Garden of Coffee, retail outlets promoting Ethiopian coffee globally. She built three brands in three industries, all built on a foundation of rejecting the narrative that Africa needs saving.

Bethlehem has been named a Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum, listed on Forbes' 20 Youngest Power Women in Africa, included in Fast Company's 100 Most Creative People in Business, and profiled by CNN as one of 12 Female Entrepreneurs Who Changed the Way We Do Business.

Patricia Poku-Diaby: The Cocoa Queen Worth $720 Million

Patricia Poku-Diaby&nbsp; is the founder and CEO of Plot Enterprise Group, a cocoa processing company with facilities in Ghana and Côte d'Ivoire. The Ghanaian facility has a capacity of 32,000 metric tons per year. The Ivorian facility processes 16,000 metric tons annually. These aren't small operations. These are state-of-the-art processing plants in an industry dominated by men, by Western corporations, by centuries of colonial extraction that enriched Europe whilst leaving African cocoa farmers poor.

Patricia entered this industry knowing all of that, and she built an empire anyway. She started in her family's trading and transportation business before establishing Plot Enterprise Group. Over 27 years, she's built a portfolio that includes cocoa sourcing companies across West Africa, processing facilities that compete with the biggest players in the industry, and a reputation as the only woman in Africa to establish a large-scale cocoa processing operation.

In an industry where African countries produce the cocoa and European companies process it into chocolate and profit from it, Patricia built processing capacity in Africa. She's keeping value on the continent. She's employing people locally. She's proving that African women can compete and win, in industries that were designed to exclude them.

She chairs the Board of Directors for her sourcing companies. She runs a multimillion-dollar operation. She's worth nearly a billion dollars.&nbsp;

Fatoumata Bâ: The Tech Investor Rewriting Africa's Startup Story

Fatoumata Bâ hacked her father's computer when she was nine years old. By 11, she had her first email address. By 16, she'd built her first website. By the time she was in her twenties, she was expanding Jumia across West Africa. For those who don't know, Jumia is often called "the Amazon of Africa." Fatoumata was the CEO of Jumia Côte d'Ivoire from 2013 to 2015, then became Managing Director of Jumia Nigeria, leading the company's expansion and success across the continent during a critical growth period.

Fatoumata didn't stop at building someone else's company; she started her own. In 2018, she founded Janngo Capital, an Ivory Coast-based venture capital firm investing in pan-African "tech for good" champions. The fund focuses on consumer goods, retail, agribusiness, technology, financial services, and healthcare, sectors that actually impact people's lives, not just tech bro apps that solve problems rich people don't have.

Janngo Capital is Africa's largest gender-balanced tech fund. It's backed by the European Investment Bank, the African Development Bank, and Proparco, institutions that don't invest lightly. She's on the Board of SouthBridge Investment Bank. She's a member of the Board and Investment Committee of Creadev Africa. She serves on the Council of Women in Africa and the World Economic Forum's Global Future Council on the New Economic Agenda.

She's been named a Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum, listed in Choiseul 100 Africa as one of the Economic Leaders of Tomorrow, included in Forbes Africa's 30 Under 30, and recognized as one of the 100 Most Influential African Women in 2020 and 2021.

Fatoumata is investing in Africa, for Africa, with African solutions to African challenges and she's doing it with a fund that prioritizes gender balance, because she knows that when you exclude women, you exclude half the talent, half the innovation, half the solutions.

Oluyemi Iranloye: The Cassava Queen Turning a Root Crop Into a Global Commodity

Most people think of cassava as a subsistence crop. Something poor people eat when they can't afford anything else. A root vegetable with no global market value. Oluyemi Iranloye thinks that's nonsense, and she's built a multimillion-dollar business proving it.

Oluyemi, known as the Cassava Queen, is the founder and CEO of Psaltry International, a cassava processing company based in Nigeria, but this isn't just another agricultural processing plant. Psaltry International is the first African producer of cassava sorbitol, a sweetener and industrial ingredient used in everything from food products to pharmaceuticals. She took a crop that people dismissed as "poor man's food" and turned it into an industrial commodity with global applications.

Cassava is rich in dietary fiber, has a low glycemic index (meaning it doesn't spike blood sugar the way other carbs do), and is loaded with vitamin C. It's versatile, resilient, and grows well in African climates. But for decades, it's been undervalued, underutilized, and dismissed by global markets. Oluyemi saw potential where everyone else saw limitations. She started Psaltry International with a vision: to make cassava a global commodity. Not by exporting it raw and letting Western companies process it and profit from it, but by processing it in Nigeria and exporting finished products.

She's empowered over 500 local cassava farmers, providing them with sustainable income and market access. She's created jobs. She's built processing infrastructure. She's positioned Nigeria as a key player in the global cassava market, and she won the WAYA Award in 2022 for her work as an agribusiness mentor.

Everyone wants to talk about tech. Everyone wants to fund the next fintech app. But agriculture employs the majority of Africans and feeds entire nations, and women like Oluyemi are revolutionizing it, not with flashy apps, but with processing plants, supply chains, and market access

Leah Wambui: The Form Four Leaver Who Built a Ksh3 Billion Real Estate Empire

Leah Wambui never went to university. She finished Form Four, couldn't afford school fees, and took a job as a receptionist. That could have been the end of the story. That's where a lot of stories end; young woman, orphaned at 16, no degree, limited options, grateful for whatever job she can get. But Leah looked at that receptionist's salary and said: I deserve better. So she quit.

She started her first business, a liquor store in Kiambu, with help from her maternal aunt. She learned entrepreneurship through trial and error, juggling businesses, saving money, taking risks. In 2015, she bought a five-acre piece of land in Kitengela. That decision changed everything. She sold her house, used their savings, and started building. The plan was to construct 10 houses. The reality became 200.

Cheriez Properties Limited now boasts 200 luxury homes, each valued at Ksh15 million (approximately $115,000). That's a portfolio worth Ksh3 billion (around $23 million). From a receptionist job, she couldn't settle for to a multimillion-dollar real estate empire. In less than a decade. She faced challenges. She had to fire all her employees at one point because of rampant theft, tiles disappearing at night, project managers colluding with contractors to inflate invoices, and systematic corruption that threatened to sink the business. She cleaned the house, rebuilt her team and kept going and now she's one of Kenya's most successful real estate developers.

What Women's History Month Should Actually Be About

Women's History Month is important. We should honor the women who came before us, who fought for rights, who opened doors we walk through without thinking but let's also celebrate the women making history right now.

The ones building empires whilst everyone's still debating whether women can lead. The ones creating jobs, generating wealth, transforming industries, and refusing to wait for permission.

Bethlehem, Patricia, Fatoumata, Oluyemi, and Leah aren't "inspiring" in the passive sense. They're not poster women for motivation. They're not here to make you feel good about what's possible.

They're here to show you what's already happening.
