Growing up has always been in a conservative, religious setting where life had a definite structure from a set of rules and principles. My father was a faithful, loving man and the head of my family. This man upheld the traditions and values his parents handed us, giving us the power to lead a life of disciplined respect and faith. Today is Father’s Day and As I look back to my childhood and our family's journey, there is one incident—a story of Disobedience, rebellion when I got a belly piercing and redemption enabled by love—that forever changed my understanding of my father's love.

My father was a man of solid faith and strong principles. He believed in structure and discipline as the cornerstone of harmonious family life. Church on Sundays, prayer before meals, and modesty were insisted upon in our household.

My father's love for us was demonstrated through his ability to provide for us, his wise guidance, and his use of discipline to steer us in the right direction. Being the elder of three children, and with that fact, I also turned out to be subject to the closest attention or observation. My father expected me to be an epitome of emulation for my brother and sister, like the values he held called out for. As much as I looked up to my father, a part of me yearned for unguarded freedom and expression—a part that felt drawn and suffocated by our family's strict rules.

The summer of the end of high school, I have been a potential student, dutiful and respectful. But just before getting released from the bonds of high school, I had begun to feel intensely the urge to exercise my independence. My friends at school spoke so often about their latest fashion statements, matching hairstyles, and choice of accessories.

The one topic I always stuck on was body piercings. It fascinated me—the idea of having something, especially mine, something that represented my individuality.

But then again, with all the fascination, my heart told me that my father would never approve of this. To him, body piercings were almost equal to self-mutilation and veered far away from God's intent of creating this beauty. But then again, the interest in the forbidden fruit increased every day.

It happened one Friday afternoon when my heart was pounding, and my hands were trembling—when I decided to get a piercing on my belly. I remember sneaking out after school, all filled with excitement and fear at a go. The needle passed through the skin, and adrenaline came in, setting me free for a fraction of a section like I had taken control of my life.

After Coming back home that evening, the reality weighed in on me. This guilt was manifesting in a knot in my stomach, knowing that I had directly disobeyed my father's wishes. I tried to hide the piercing, but the fear of being caught loomed like a dark cloud.

Eventually, my secret was first revealed to my sister, and it happened that One evening, I was changing, and at that moment, my younger sister entered my room without knocking. Her eyes widened in shock as she spotted a small glinting piece of metal on my belly. She hushedly says, "Is that a belly piercing? Does Dad know?".

Panic flooded through me, but I quickly pulled myself together and begged her not to say anything. Still, she did not; the tensions in our house became so palpable; it was as if I had ruined any of the harmony my father had worked so hard to keep in place through my childish act of rebellion. It was a matter of time until the truth came out.

So it followed a few weeks later. My father, having observed the change in my behaviour, thinking that something was wrong, went straight to the point and faced me. "There is something you need to tell me?" his voice, still calm and firm, made an impression.

I hesitated, the weight of my secret pressing heavily on my shoulders. Finally, with a deep breath, I lifted my shirt just enough for my dad to see the piercing. The disappointment and hurt in his eyes were more painful than I had imagined.

"Why?" he asked, voice breaking slightly. "Why would you do this when you knew it was against our values?"

Tears filled my eyes as I tried to find the right words. "I just wanted to feel free, to have something my own," I replied, my voice quivering.

My father heavily groaned, rubbing his temples—what he always does when upset—and muttered to himself: "This is not just about the piercing. This is about respect and trust. The trust we had? It's broken now, and that hurts more than anything.

The next few days were indeed hard ones. The home remained almost silent; maybe the few exchanged words hurtfully reminded him each time of my defiance. Not about the piercing itself, but the pain it brought to him did I ever regret my actions. An affectionate father always, he never ceased to care for me. He continued to provide, pray for me, and show love to me in whatever way he deemed fit.

One Sunday, after church, my father sat with me for a heart-to-heart talk after the service. "I've been praying and thinking a lot lately," he continued. "I realize you're old enough, and part of growing up is finding your way. But there's a way to let everybody else still regard the important things around here."

Well, the essence of it was communication and understanding, trying to blend ideas and strike that balance between individuality and family principles. He reminded me that his rules were not just restrictions; they were guidelines that protected and guided us.

And somehow, he touched me with his words in parts of my heart, way more profound than deep. I could see the love and care beneath his rigidity and intricate facades, the great effort he put into being a good father. That was when I first knew of the power of his love: strong enough to forgive, guide, and nurture.

The process of rebuilding trust was gradual. I consciously tried to communicate openly with my father, understand his perspective, and express myself in alignment with my upbringing. My father, in turn, learned to become more open to listening and understanding my wants and fears.

One evening, while sitting on the porch watching the setting sun, he turned my way and said, "I'm proud of you, you know. It takes courage to admit you're mistaken and work to make things right.

His words brought so much pride and thankful feelings within me. I realized that it had grown stronger through this ordeal, as love, forgiveness, and mutual respect have been built since then.

Today is Father's Day, and I thought about the journey my father and I had been on together. I thought about how the strict rules and principles and those rifts shared had let the love in between.

Knowing how complete disobedience on my part did not dim my father's love, it only showed that he did lovingly; for now, he had to forgive and guide me to the right path again. He was strict not because he wanted his way but because he was full of love and responsible for the family's well-being.

As I reflect on Father's Day, celebrating all the wonderful fathers in our lives, My heart is filled with gratitude for my dad, a man of faith, great principles, and unconditional, never-ending love that moulded me into what I am today.
