The first time Tunde noticed something was different about Bayo, it was at Seun's birthday owambe somewhere in Lekki on a Saturday that was entirely too hot for the amount of agbada in the room.

Bayo walked in, and something about his face was different. He looked rested. He looked clear. He looked, somehow, younger than he had the last time they had seen each other, even though both of them had spent the last year collecting the same Lagos stress, eating the same late-night jollof, and sleeping the same insufficient hours.

"Guy," Tunde said when they were standing by the drinks table. "You look different. You do something to your face?"

Bayo shrugged. "Ori. Shea butter. You know how it is."

Tunde squinted. That was not a shea butter face. He had seen Shea butter faces. This was something else.

It took two more weeks, one group chat interrogation, and Bayo's girlfriend, Sola, exposing him on a WhatsApp voice note for the full truth to come out. Bayo had a skincare routine. A proper one. Cleanser, moisturiser, sunscreen, serum, the works. He had been doing it for six months and lying about it the whole time because, in his own words, he didn't want the guys to start calling him soft.

Which is, with respect to Bayo, one of the most expensive lies a man can tell himself because SKINCARE IS NOT A WOMAN’S THING. It is a skin thing and you have skin. It is, in fact, the largest organ on your body, and it has been outside in the Lagos sun, collecting pollution, stress, and neglect, while you wash it with bar soap and wonder why it looks tired.

Bayo figured it out. Here's everything he learned and everything you need to know.

Before we get into the actual routine, let's quickly dismantle the things men tell themselves to avoid starting one.

"I don't have time." A basic skincare routine takes 3 minutes in the morning and 3 minutes at night. You spend more time than that looking for your keys, arguing with yourself about whether to snooze, or standing in front of the fridge deciding you're not hungry. Time is not the issue.

"It's too complicated." It is not. The skincare industry has made it look complicated because complicated sells more products. You do not need 12 steps. You need 3 things. We will get to them shortly.

"My skin is fine." Is it though? When last did you look at your face in proper lighting, not the dim bathroom light that flatters everyone and actually assessed what you saw? Fine is what we say when we've stopped paying attention.

"Skincare is for women." We are retiring this today. Your skin does not know your gender. It is an organ that requires maintenance regardless of who you are. The men you look at and think "he ages well" are not lucky. They are consistent. There is a difference.

Now. Let's talk about what you actually need.

Everything in skincare comes down to three fundamentals. Cleansing, moisturising, and sun protection. That is it. Everything else is extra, good extra, sometimes, but extra. If you do these three things consistently, your skin will look noticeably different within 4 to 6 weeks. Not filtered differently. Just well-maintained, rested, and like someone who gives a damn, which, it turns out, is extremely attractive.

Step 1: Cleanse (And Stop Using Bar Soap On Your Face)

Your face is not your body. The skin on your face is more sensitive, more exposed, and more reactive than everywhere else, and bar soap, especially the harsh ones, strips it of its natural oils and leaves it either dry and tight, or overcompensating by producing so much oil your face looks like a crime scene by noon. Both outcomes are bad. Both are avoidable.

A face wash, also called a cleanser, is formulated specifically for facial skin. It cleans without destroying your skin barrier, which is essentially the protective layer that keeps your face looking healthy and not like it's staging a protest.

How to pick one: If your skin tends to be oily or you break out, go for a gel or foam cleanser, something light that rinses clean. If your skin feels dry or tight after washing, go for a cream cleanser, gentler, less stripping. If you genuinely don't know your skin type, anything labelled "gentle" or "for all skin types" is a safe starting point.

How to use it: Morning and night. Not just when you remember, every morning, every night. Use lukewarm water, not hot. Hot water damages your skin barrier over time, and your skin barrier is not something you want to be carelessly damaging. Pat dry with a clean towel. Do not scrub your face like a pot you're trying to get clean before your mother arrives. You are not a pot.

Quick note for the Nigerian men in the room: some black soap formulations are genuinely good for oily or acne-prone skin. If you're using one, make sure it's properly formulated for the face, not the kind that leaves you feeling like you washed with sandpaper.

This is the step men resist the most, and it is also the step that produces the fastest visible results. The logic that stops most men, "my skin is already oily, why would I add moisture?"&nbsp; is understandable and also incorrect.

When your skin is dehydrated, it produces more oil to compensate. Moisturising properly actually regulates oil production over time. Dry skin also ages faster, looks duller, and is more prone to irritation and dark spots. There is no skin type on this earth that benefits from skipping moisturiser..

How to pick one: Oily skin — a lightweight gel moisturiser. It absorbs in seconds, feels like nothing on your face, and will not make you look like you rubbed groundnut oil on yourself before leaving the house.&nbsp;

Dry skin — a cream moisturiser, something richer that actually seals in hydration.

Combination or normal skin — anything lightweight labelled "balance" or "all skin types" works fine.

How to use it: Apply after cleansing, while your skin is still slightly damp. The slightly damp part is not decorative advice; it seals in the water from washing, which is how moisturiser actually works. Morning and night. Both times. Every time.

If you are currently putting nothing on your face after washing it, not even a splash of something, and your skin has been looking dull or feeling tight, this step alone will change things within two weeks. We are not exaggerating.

This is the most important step and the most ignored one. Sun damage is the number one cause of premature ageing, the dark spots, the uneven tone, the lines that arrive before they should, the general "this man looks older than his age" situation that nobody wants to be and if you are a dark-skinned man thinking the sun doesn't apply to you, it does.

Melanin offers some natural protection. It does not offer enough to skip SPF entirely and hyperpigmentation, those dark spots that remain after a pimple, a cut, or any skin irritation, gets significantly worse with unprotected sun exposure. If you have been wondering why your spots aren't fading, the sun is likely a significant part of that answer.

SPF 30 is the minimum. SPF 50 is better, especially in Nigeria, where the sun is not playing games and has never played games. Apply every morning after moisturising, before you leave the house. On cloudy days, too, because UV rays do not take days off, even when the sky looks grey.

How to pick one: The sunscreens that left everyone looking ashy and pale are largely a thing of the past. There are now plenty of options formulated for darker skin tones that absorb cleanly, leave no white cast, and feel like nothing on the face. Look for SPF 50, "no white cast," and "lightweight." If you find a moisturiser with SPF 30 or higher already in it, that counts as one less step.

This is the step Bayo was doing that nobody else knew about. This is the step that was fading his spots while everyone else's were staying put. Do not skip it.

Once the three basics are consistent,&nbsp; you can start addressing specific concerns.

Dark spots and uneven tone: Niacinamide is your best friend. It is a form of Vitamin B3 that brightens skin, reduces dark spots, controls oil, and strengthens the skin barrier, all at once, at almost every price point. It works particularly well on darker skin tones and plays nicely with almost every other product. Apply a few drops after cleansing, before moisturising.

Razor bumps and ingrown hairs: One of the most common issues for Black men and one of the most fixable. A gentle chemical exfoliant, something with salicylic acid, used 2 to 3 times a week, prevents ingrown hairs by keeping dead skin cells from trapping the hair. Do not use a physical scrub every single day. It does more damage than good.

Persistent dryness: If your skin is consistently dry despite moisturising, add a hyaluronic acid serum before your moisturiser. It pulls water into the skin and holds it there. Simple, effective, and one of the most underrated products available.

Morning: Wash face with cleanser. Apply serum if you're using one. Apply moisturiser. Apply sunscreen. Leave the house. Four minutes maximum.

Night: Wash face with cleanser. Apply serum. Apply moisturiser. Sleep like someone who has their life together.

That is it. That is the whole thing. You do not need a shelf full of products. You do not need to spend a lot of money. You need the right three or four products for your skin type, used consistently, every single day, without making it complicated.

Bayo is not exceptionally disciplined. He is not blessed with remarkable genes. He is a regular man in Lagos who was told the right information, bought three products, and used them every day until people started noticing. You have now been told the right information.

Your skin has been outside in this sun, in this pollution, in this stress, for years. It has been doing its best with what you've given it. Give it something better. Start tonight,&nbsp; just the cleanser and the moisturiser if that's all you have. Add the sunscreen tomorrow morning. Six weeks from now, someone at an owambe will look at you twice. You will shrug and say something modest. Then you will text this article to your friend who hasn't started yet.
