The emergence of large language models—a type of artificial intelligence trained on massive amounts of text to understand and generate human-like language—has been of remarkable help to humanity. Nowadays, we no longer have to spend tiresome hours Googling basic information. ChatGPT and its counterparts serve as the most efficient search engines for every task.

These AI tools are influencing every sphere, mostly positively. Therapists have close competition now that ChatGPT offers free guidance and counselling. <a href="https://aura.ng/news/which-african-tech-sector-should-you-work-in-">Tech professionals</a> leverage AI to write long, complex code in less time. And medical students utilise platforms like Grok and Gemini to study smarter.

But the creatives…that’s where it gets twisted. Many creatives are losing their creativity to heavy reliance on AI. Here are a few boundaries you can put in place as an artist to ensure your art remains original, even while you enhance your pieces with AI.

1. Never Allow AI to Write the First Draft

Rule number one: always write your first draft. The moment you start relying on ChatGPT for drafts, there’s no turning back. You can use it to source an outline, but that’s as far as it should go. Albeit messy, ensure that your draft is originally yours. This is how you preserve your peculiar tone.

2. Understand AI Inputs Before Implementing Them

When you ask AI to make inputs to your work, question its reasons. Probe it; ask why it may have made certain corrections or recommendations. Say something like, “Hi Chat, proofread this piece and provide reasons for every addition or subtraction you make.” Don’t just assume whatever it says is superior to your original idea. Moreover, AI is fallible, so you should also check for errors.

Where it gets dangerous is when you begin to ask ChatGPT to make decisions that your emotions would usually drive as a creative. Your biggest source of inspiration should be your imagination and experiences. So, when AI begins to substitute those, you’ll be messing with your tone of voice.

As mentioned earlier, AI makes mistakes. Ensure you cross-check, filter, and sift through all information obtained to enforce accuracy and preserve an excellent standard. There are very recognisable AI tropes that could easily flag your work as AI-generated. So, even when you ask for its help, you should only use it as a guide for your own piece.

Lastly, protect your signature style. Just as no two human beings are the same, no two creatives are identical. Do not lose your authenticity in the bid to sound like someone else… not even your mentors. You can train your favourite LLM to understand your tone so that any assistance it offers aligns with your voice. The quality of your prompts ultimately determines the responses you’ll receive from the system.
