Losing a <a href="https://aura.ng/culture/we-should-be-ambitious-about-our-friendships">friend</a> was not on my bingo card. And even if I were leaving room for life to happen, I never imagined my favourite girl would become my enemy overnight. Not after fourteen years of bonding and growing together. I was certain we had built something unbreakable. Unfortunately, things took an ugly and unexpected turn.

I’m still in the process of healing, and I would be lying if I said it’s easy. For the longest time, I kept wondering what exactly went wrong until it finally hit me one late night...two weeks after she stopped picking up my calls, responding to my texts, and blocking me on all social media platforms. Among other issues that had been quietly brewing, it turns out one of my many “confrontations” was the final straw that broke the camel’s back.

In that moment, I remember thinking, “Should I have just lied? Your boyfriend is a casanova, and you expect me to support the relationship?” But now that my emotions are more stable, replaying everything has made me realise that I didn’t just tell the truth. I embarrassed her in the process. And that was exactly what hurt her about my so-called truth: how inconsiderate it was.

Over the years, I had always felt like my <a href="https://aura.ng/life-and-love/sis-is-your-bestie-really-your-bestie-5-red-flags-to-spot">best friend</a> was strong-willed and didn’t really listen to my advice. At first, it wasn’t a problem because I learned to just give my input less. But as time went on and the stakes got higher, I couldn’t afford to see her stubbornness cost her. I loved her too much to sit quietly while she made wrong decisions. Sadly, I went to the extreme and focused more on driving my point home than on how my words actually made her feel.

The truth is always going to be the gold standard, but the truth is not always worth hurting someone for. If there’s one lifelong lesson I’ve taken from this, it’s that kindness often matters more than intention. An unkind action will easily nullify all the care and concern behind it and make you the villain.

Today, I’ve lost both my best friend and my support system. And if I’m being honest, my input into her relationship was not worth our friendship. A more subtle approach—or even allowing life to run its course—might have opened her eyes eventually.

Now, the damage has already been done. The friendship is broken, and it doesn’t seem to stand a chance of repair. Unless, somehow, she stumbles on this post and agrees to give me a second chance.
