Picture this: It's Saturday night in Lagos. The group chat is active, and somebody wants to know where the location is, while someone else is already complaining about how expensive going out has become. Eventually, everyone settles on a favourite club. The outfits are giving, the pictures are fire, and after a little this and that, y'all finally go inside ready to have a good time, but wait a minute? Who is that in the VIP section? Did you see that girl's shoes? Omo, that guy's wristwatch is sleek.

And that becomes the night's agenda; watching for the next big personality who will walk through the door. So much for a night of fun, huh? Now, don't get it twisted. We're not saying that every club experience is like this, but if you're reading this and it feels all too familiar and you've pretty much had it, maybe it's time to try something different. And no, we're not here to recommend another club to you. Have you ever heard of a rave?

So, What's This Rave Thing Everybody's Talking About?

Imagine a party where the music is the main event, people are actually dancing, and especially not spending the entire night trying to look like the richest person in the room. Well, that's a rave.

Think good DJs, loud music, people dancing with their friends and a crowd that's there to actually enjoy the experience. From Amapiano sounds to house music to techno, even Afrobeats and a host of others. You don't need to know every DJ on the lineup or understand every genre being played. All you would need to do is just show up ready to have a good time.

“But why? What's the big idea about a rave?" Well then, let's talk about it. Here are a few reasons you might want to experience one yourself.

5 Reasons Your Next Night Out Might Need a Rave.

1. BECAUSE LAGOS HAS STRESSED YOU ENOUGH ALREADY.

If it's just the commute to and fro work alone, that's enough reason for an unwind. Now add in all the possible gbagbati that happened at work; that's pretty much cause for some fresh air and good music to melt all that stress away. As an adult living in Nigeria, sometimes all you need to get through the week is one evening where nobody is asking you for anything. Nobody is calling you for another networking seminar or calling for another meeting that could have been an email. Just good music, your friends and an opportunity to dance away some of the week's frustration.

Will the rave solve all your problems? Unfortunately not; you live in Lagos, remember? But at least, you'll have the memories of a good night out to hold on to.

2. YOU CAN ENJOY YOURSELF WITHOUT TRYING TO IMPRESS ANYBODY.

Now, this is a hill we're willing to dance on. Nobody is necessarily checking out anybody's pocket at a rave. There's no pressure to buy the most expensive wine on the shelf or look a certain part. No unofficial financial audit or anything of such happening.

What are we here for? To listen to some great sounds and dance the night away.

While we can agree that every event has its own crowd, part of the appeal of rave culture is that the music and dancing take priority over all that performance for the most part. You can simply choose to focus on enjoying the night rather than proving that you're enjoying it. Do you get?

3. YOU MIGHT MEET YOUR NEXT FAVOURITE PERSON OR COLLABORATOR.

You know that thing where people say the best kind of networking happens at tech conferences, industry mixers, and even church? We are adding another one to the list: a rave. Maybe it's because at a rave, nobody needs to perform for anybody; after all, we're all here to have a good time, right? But if you check very well, the person dancing next to you may be your next big break or at least a connection to it. Or they could even be your "the one". Or they could just be your new best friend.

We did not say you should start sizing up the people you meet over there, but we're also not saying that you can't serve a smile and say "hi" to the person beside you. Who knows?

4. YOUR OUTFIT DOESN'T HAVE TO BECOME A GROUP PROJECT.

One of the reasons why your group chat hasn't been able to all gather in one place at the same time is because someone or some people can't seem to figure out what to wear. Oh yes, we know they won't tell you, but we're telling you now. But all hope is not lost, okay?

Everyone knows that one of the most exhausting parts about planning a night out is the outfit check, but over here you don't have to worry about any of that. Of course, you can still decide to go all out for your outfit, but if you're too tired to do that, you can slap on a baggy jean, t-shirt, accessories, and viola! You're good to go, and this option goes for both genders.

So next time, you want to invite the group chat for a night out, take them to a rave and let them know they can wear what they have, literally.

5. BECAUSE YOUR WEEKENDS DESERVE A LITTLE VARIETY.

Some of you, your weekends are already beginning to have a pattern: same location, same lounge spot, same booze, same DJ, same playlist. Are you not tired? There's nothing wrong with having a favourite spot, but surely you deserve more stories and more adventure?

Another fun thing about exploring a different kind of party is not knowing exactly what to expect. There is a good chance that you'll stumble on a DJ you've never heard before, a song that sends everybody into a frenzy, a new group of people, or a moment that becomes the highlight of your weekend.

With all said and done, you might discover that you love raves or you might realise you prefer your usual club nights. Either way, at least you would have experienced something different. And isn't that part of the point of going out in the first place?

Anyway, we hope we've been able to convince you, and not confuse you, that your weekend nightlife doesn't always have to follow the same script. You don't have to abandon your favourite club either, but we must let you know that Lagos is too interesting for you to keep doing the exact same thing every Saturday.
