Imagine spending time building something, finally putting it out there, and watching people get excited about your work.

People are sharing it and talking about it, and you're probably already thinking about what to improve next.

Then somebody else releases something inspired by a similar idea.

And before you can even say congratulations, the entire internet has moved into their house.

Brands are there. Influencers are there. People who haven't played a game since Temple Run are there. Even those who have no idea what's happening are posting screenshots because nobody wants to be left out of the hype.

And you're left wondering, "How did we get here?"

Welcome to the Lagos Run versus Lagos Life conversation.

And before anything else, let's get something straight.

Shalom deserves every bit of recognition she's earned for Lagos Life. But that doesn't mean Eureka's contribution has suddenly become irrelevant because somebody else's game attracted more attention.

So, Because He Came First, Everybody Else Should Go Home?

Before Lagos Life had Nigerians arguing about virtual rent, employment, and who was richer than whom, Opeyemi Adeniran, popularly known as eureka_seamless on X, had released Lagos Run, a game built around driving a Danfo through Lagos.

The idea wasn't rocket science. All you had to do was pick up passengers, navigate traffic, avoid obstacles, and try not to embarrass yourself.

It had all the familiar feel of being in a Danfo; only this time, you get to be the driver, swerving recklessly, occasionally cussing at agberos and other drivers on the highway, and maybe driving head-on into a pole or ditch from time to time.

And while people were still getting accustomed to Lagos Run, figuring out new tactics to dodge virtual agberos on the highway and beat their previous scores, a new sensation sprang up, and almost everybody lost their minds.

If you haven't heard of the game or haven't played it yet, then peer pressure has absolutely nothing on you.

You see, Lagos Run offered players the opportunity to experience what it felt like to be behind the wheel of the popular yellow Danfo bus.

But Lagos Life? It gave players an entirely new world.

People were getting jobs, acquiring property, making money, complaining about the economy, and generally doing all the things they already do in real life, except this time, it was supposed to be all fun and games with no actual real-life consequences.

Within days, Lagos Life had become one of those things you couldn't escape on X, or anywhere for that matter.

Everybody was talking about Lagos Life.

Okay, maybe not everybody. But surely, there's at least one person in your circle who has played the game.

Somewhere between the excitement and the screenshots, however, people started asking why Eureka wasn't receiving the same attention.

One X user argued that the danfo game's creator had been pushed into the background because Lagos Life arrived shortly afterwards.

And listen, the frustration is understandable.

If you've ever worked hard on something, only to watch someone else receive greater recognition for something similar, you know how unpleasant that feeling can be.

You might even be genuinely happy for them but still wonder why your own work didn't receive the same excitement.

Since when did creating something first mean that nobody else was allowed to create anything remotely similar until you've finished enjoying your moment?

Because some of the arguments make it sound as though Shalom should have looked at Eureka's game, admired it respectfully, and then closed her laptop.

Is that really the kind of creative industry we want to cultivate?

One of the loudest accusations in this conversation is that Shalom copied Eureka.

That's quite an accusation, don't you think?

Shalom has acknowledged that seeing the danfo game helped spark the idea for Lagos Life. She's also spoken about her interest in games like The Sims.

So yes, there's an acknowledged connection between the two projects.

But being inspired by something is not automatically the same as stealing it, especially when the actual games offer different experiences.

Lagos Run is built around driving a Danfo, collecting passengers, and progressing through a driving game.

Lagos Life, on the other hand, is a broader life simulation where players can work, earn money, interact, and explore different possibilities within a virtual city.

They share a recognisable Nigerian setting, but they aren't interchangeable games.

What is particularly interesting is that some people have taken the fact that Lagos Life launched after Lagos Run and treated it as sufficient evidence of wrongdoing.

Now, could Shalom have recognised the excitement around Lagos Run and decided that this was a good moment to release her own project?

And that brings up a more interesting question.

Does recognising an opportunity automatically make someone dishonest?

Because if every product inspired by another product is going to be treated as theft, half the creative industry might as well pack up and go home.

That's not to say copying doesn't happen. It does.

But accusing someone of copying requires more than pointing at two projects and shouting, "Oh look! They both have Lagos!"

Maybe It Wasn't Just the Game. Maybe It Was the Timing.

Now, this is where things get particularly interesting.

Because sometimes, having a good idea isn't enough. You also have to know what to do with it when people start paying attention.

And from the way Lagos Life has unfolded online, Shalom appears to understand the importance of keeping an audience engaged.

Every time you turn around, there's another conversation about Lagos Life.

A new feature. A new update. A new experience.

There is either somebody complaining about something happening inside the game or somebody else showing off their virtual achievements.

At some point, Lagos Life stopped feeling like just a game and started feeling like a whole online community with its own problems.

Which, considering the fact that it's based on Lagos, is honestly very on-brand.

One X user made an interesting observation about timing, arguing that Shalom recognised the excitement around Eureka's game and seized the opportunity to introduce something people were already interested in.

And we have to agree that they're not entirely wrong.

Because, sometimes, your idea is good. Your execution is great. Your product is amazing.

Or perhaps people simply haven't found a reason to care yet.

Then someone else arrives with a different approach, and suddenly, everybody understands the appeal.

However, there's also something unfair about the way creativity is sometimes measured.

Because what happens to the brilliant developer who doesn't particularly enjoy posting online? What happens to the person who spends most of their time improving their product instead of reminding everybody that it exists?

Does their work deserve less recognition simply because somebody else is louder?

Surely not. But the internet isn't obligated to give everybody equal attention either.

The Money Is Making Everybody Even Angrier.

If Lagos Life had gone viral for three days and everybody moved on, would this argument be as intense?

But once conversations about funding, valuation, and revenue started entering the chat, the stakes became different.

One X user suggested that the danfo game's creator might not have made much money while Lagos Life was heading towards significant commercial success.

Now, those earnings claims are the user's speculation, not actual confirmed financial records.

But the underlying sentiment is understandable.

Some people believe the person who helped spark the excitement should not be watching someone else reap most of the rewards.

Perhaps Shalom should have taken time to recognise Eureka's game, which we can say she already did by admitting that his game inspired her to finally work on hers.

But come to think of it, it is also in account that Shalom already had it in mind before now to create a game similar to one of her favourite games growing up, The Sims.

Yes, she finally acted on her idea after seeing Eureka's game, but we don't see the creator of The Sims making any fuss or accusing Shalom of creativity theft.

Money does, in fact, have a way of revealing who gets celebrated and who gets forgotten.

But perhaps the conversation should be less about whether Shalom deserves her success and more about whether enough attention is being given to creators whose work doesn't immediately become the biggest thing on the timeline.

Because not everybody will go viral. But that doesn't mean their work isn't valuable.

But Are We Even Comparing the Same Kind of Game?

Here's another argument that deserves more attention.

What if Lagos Life became more popular because its format naturally gives people more things to do and discuss?

With Lagos Run, the central experience is driving a Danfo. You navigate the roads, pick up passengers and try to improve your performance after every game.

With Lagos Life, you're participating in a virtual society. You can earn money, acquire things, make decisions and return to see what else has changed.

Since when did being inspired by someone else's work become a crime? The Lagos Run and Lagos Life debate is raising uncomfortable questions about creativity, credit, and competition.
