Olivia Dean won Best New Artist. Kendrick Lamar and SZA's "luther" won Record Of The Year. Billie Eilish won Song Of The Year. It was, by all accounts, Music's Biggest Night.

But for Nigerian music, it was just another night of being seen but not recognized.

Burna Boy was nominated twice and lost both times. Davido and Omah Lay were nominated. They Lost. Ayra Starr and Wizkid? Nominated. Lost.

Meanwhile, Afrobeats is literally everywhere. Nigerian artists are selling out arenas from Lagos to London to Los Angeles. Our music is on every playlist, every festival lineup, every major collaboration. We're literally the global music scene and yet, when it came time for the Recording Academy to actually acknowledge that, they said... nothing.

What more does Nigerian music have to do to win a Grammy?

Nigerian Artists Have Been Nominated Before

This isn't new. Nigerian artists have been nominated at the Grammys before. We've even won before. Burna Boy won Best Global Music Album in 2021 for Twice As Tall. Wizkid won Best Music Video in 2021 for "Brown Skin Girl." Tems won Best Melodic Rap Performance in 2023 for her work on Future's "WAIT FOR U."

So it's not like the Recording Academy doesn't know we exist. It's not like they're pretending Afrobeats isn't a global force. They've acknowledged us. They've celebrated us. They've given us awards. But somehow, that makes this year's shutout even more confusing.

Because if we've already proven ourselves, if we've already broken through, why does it feel like we're still fighting for the same recognition over and over again?

Let's talk about what Nigerian music did in 2025.

Afrobeats didn't just dominate the continent; it dominated globally. Nigerian artists were charting in the US, UK, and across Europe. Collaborations with Western artists weren't just happening; they were the norm. Rema, Tems, Burna Boy, Wizkid, and Davido aren't just big names in Africa. They're global superstars.

Burna Boy sold out arenas worldwide. Davido's "With You," featuring Omah Lay, was everywhere. Ayra Starr and Wizkid's "Gimme Dat" was a cultural moment. These weren't underground hits. These were massive, undeniable, impossible-to-ignore records.

And yet, when Grammy night came, we walked away with nothing.

So what's the standard? What's the bar? Because if selling out arenas, topping charts, and influencing global pop culture isn't enough, then what is?

The "Best African Music Performance" Problem

Let's address the elephant in the room: the Best African Music Performance category.

On paper, this category should be a celebration of African music. A space where the Recording Academy acknowledges the diversity, creativity, and global impact of music from the continent.

But in practice? It often feels like a box. A way to acknowledge African artists without actually integrating them into the main categories.

Three Nigerian artists were nominated in this category. Tyla won. And that's the end of the conversation. No Nigerian artist made it into Record Of The Year, Song Of The Year, or Album Of The Year, the categories that actually matter, the ones that define legacy.

Compare that to Latin music, which not only has its own categories but also dominates the main ones. Bad Bunny won Album Of The Year. Latin artists like Gloria Estefan and Nathaniel Lafourcade are regularly nominated and winning across pop, rap, and alternative categories.

So why is African music still siloed? Why does it feel like we're being celebrated in a separate, smaller space instead of being recognized as part of the global music landscape?

Let's be clear: Caetano Veloso is a legend. His contribution to music is undeniable. But this is 2026. Burna Boy is one of the biggest artists in the world right now. So what's the criteria here? Is it legacy? Is it current impact? Is it cultural relevance? Because if it's any of those things, Burna Boy should've won. But he didn't. And we're left wondering: what does the Recording Academy actually value when it comes to African music?

Nigerian artists don't need the Grammys to validate their success.

Burna Boy, Wizkid, Davido, Tems, Ayra Starr, they're already global icons. They're selling out shows, breaking streaming records, and influencing the sound of pop music worldwide. The Grammys didn't make them. They made themselves.

But the Grammys are supposed to be "Music's Biggest Night." They're supposed to be the industry's most prestigious honor. And when Nigerian artists, who are objectively some of the most impactful musicians in the world right now, are consistently nominated but rarely win, it raises a question about what the Grammys actually stand for.

Are they recognizing the best music? Or are they just acknowledging it exists and moving on?

When Western artists incorporate Afrobeats into their music, they get celebrated. When they work with Nigerian producers, when they add Afrobeats rhythms to their pop records, when they collaborate with Nigerian artists, they get Grammy nominations. Sometimes they even win.

But when Nigerian artists make that same music, the music that Western artists are borrowing from, we get put in a category and told "Congratulations, you were nominated."

Nigerian music has been influencing global pop for years. You hear it in Drake's music. You hear it in Beyoncé's work. You hear it in the production choices of Western pop stars who suddenly want to sound "global" and "fresh."

But when it time to actually give Nigerian artists the recognition they deserve? Silence.

We're not going to stop making music. Nigerian artists don't need permission from the Recording Academy to dominate. They've already proven that.

But the Grammys need to do better. Because right now, it feels like we're being acknowledged just enough to say "we see you," but not enough to actually matter.

Three nominations. Zero wins. That's not respect. That's tokenism. And Nigerian music deserves better than that.
