While she’s harmlessly documenting her pregnancy, men have been using her as a yardstick to shame their wives and women in general, calling them lazy, unproductive, and unattractive...and making all sorts of unfair comparisons.

Apparently, because Temi Otedola works out during pregnancy, every pregnant woman should be able to do the same. Because she looks a certain way, every other pregnant woman should too. But who exactly made a celebrity the gold standard for such a unique and sacred experience as <a href="https://aura.ng/beauty/what-causes-pregnancy-nose-and-how-to-reduce-the-swelling">pregnancy</a>?

What many of these men fail to understand is that pregnancy is one of the most complex biological processes the human body undergoes, and it is influenced by factors that extend far beyond a woman’s willpower.

So, to enlighten the predominantly male masses who apparently do not know what pregnancy entails, here are some of the factors that shape a woman’s pregnancy journey.

Pregnancy is physically demanding. A woman who enters pregnancy well-nourished and can consistently access nutritious food is likely to have a different experience from one battling food insecurity, persistent nausea, unmet cravings, or nutritional deficiencies.

Contrary to popular belief, conception and pregnancy are not solely dependent on the woman. Sperm quality contributes to embryo development, the woman's pH levels, and even the risk of certain complications. Reproduction is a team effort, whether society likes to admit it or not.

Some women naturally carry weight differently and experience fewer or less severe symptoms, such as morning sickness, fatigue, and visible swelling, while others do not. Genetics certainly plays a role in how pregnancy manifests. So before blaming a woman for how she looks while carrying a child, consider that biology may have already made some of those decisions for her.

Stress, anxiety, and emotional well-being can significantly affect pregnancy. A woman carrying the mental load of a household will not experience pregnancy the same way as one who is actively <a href="https://aura.ng/the-streets/the-nigerian-marriage-checklist-nobody-talks-about-but-everyone-uses">loved and supported</a>. Also, bear in mind that her fluctuating hormones have the potency to also contribute to her mood.&nbsp;

It is easier to prioritise health when healthcare, nutritious food, domestic help, and adequate rest are financially accessible. Money cannot buy a perfect pregnancy, but it can remove many of the burdens that weigh an expectant mother down.

And perhaps most importantly, even the same woman can have completely different pregnancies. One pregnancy may be smooth, while another may involve severe complications. This is exactly why comparing pregnancies is about as pointless as comparing fingerprints.

Pregnancy is not a competition, nor is it a performance. It is a deeply personal biological process that unfolds differently for every woman.

So men, please do better. Your pregnant wives need you now more than ever in one of the most vulnerable periods of their lives.
