It’s also delivering world-class animated <a href="https://aura.ng/culture/10-long-running-tv-shows-that-are-binge-worthy">series</a>. If you still think animations are only for kids, kindly exit the group chat. Now, to those who belong in the right fold, we come bearing very good news.

Africa is home to some of the most culturally rich mythological and sci-fi animations streaming on major platforms like Showmax and Disney+ on DStv. Yes, Africa is animating at a global level, and in no particular order, these five series are proof:

Iwájú is a Disney+ animated sci-fi series set in a futuristic version of Lagos, Nigeria. In just six episodes, the show masterfully fuses cutting-edge tech with African tradition. It explores themes of inequality and class divide, described as the everyday reality of life in Nigeria and other parts of the world. It also goes deeper to show how those issues affect society, as well as challenge the status quo.&nbsp;

&nbsp;This is a science-fiction animated anthology created by visionary directors from across the African continent. In each of its 10 episodes, each story stands on its own. From a young boy fighting to earn his place as a warrior in a futuristic Uganda to a surfer navigating a high-tech, dystopian 2050 Durban. Expect present-day relatable themes like social media obsession, environmental decay, familial duty, and the search for identity.&nbsp;

Supa Team 4 is Netflix's first original African animated series. It is a superhero action-comedy series set in a neo-futuristic version of Lusaka, Zambia. The story follows four teenage girls who are recruited by a retired secret agent named Mama K to form a superhero team. Together, they must save the world—or at least Lusaka—while managing to keep up with their schoolwork and typical everyday life as teenagers.

Here’s an animated action-adventure series centred around a seven-year-old named Kiya and her two best friends. It is set in the fictional city of Kimoja. The trio uses mystical headbands to transform into superheroes and fight villainy with their unique powers. Kiya and the Kimoja Horses focuses on themes of community, empathy, and unity.

Iyanu is based on a graphic novel by<a href="https://aura.ng/culture/the-busayo-element-turning-authenticity-into-creative-currency"> Nigerian creator</a> Roy Okupe. Set in a mystical version of Yorubaland, the show blends Nigerian history, music, and Yoruba mythology into a coming-of-age action-adventure. It features an all-African voice cast, including Nollywood star Adesua Etomi and Shaffy Bello, and a theme song by <a href="https://aura.ng/culture/5-rising-african-artists-to-watch-in-2026">Afropop</a> goddess Yemi Alade. Watch it to discover how the Child of Wonder, Iyanu, must harness her powers to save her homeland from an ancient curse.
