Most people struggle to balance one full-time job. Francisca balances three. By day, she is deep in meetings, inspections, and workplace safety protocols&nbsp; a career that demands her full attention and then some. By evening, she is a mother, settling a baby to sleep in the quiet hours. And then, when the house is finally still and most people have surrendered to Netflix, she picks up her phone and starts creating content about hair. Not because she has to. Because this, out of everything, is the part of the day she looks forward to most.

This is not a complaint. This is, by her own description, her favourite part of the day.

"Even when I'm already tired from work, once I get home and I start creating content around beauty, around hair&nbsp; I come alive," she says. "It doesn't feel like a burden. It comes to me with ease."

She is the founder of <a href="https://curlsandtresses.com.ng/">Curls and Tresses</a>, a <a href="https://aura.ng/beauty/5-top-natural-hairstyles-inspired-by-the-iconic-beverly-naya">natural hair </a>brand built specifically for women with 4C hair; the coarse, tight-coiled hair type that Nigerian women have spent decades being told is "unmanageable," "too hard," and "not worth the stress." Francisca disagrees. Strongly.

But before we get into the brand, we need to talk about the hair journey. Because that is where this whole thing started.

The First Attempt Was a Disaster (and She'll Be the First to Tell You)

When she entered university, Francisca started noticing something. Women were doing afro puffs. Micro braids. Short twists. Natural hair was having a moment, and she wanted in.

So she did what many of us have done: she jumped in headfirst, without doing her research.

"I cut my hair and put in artificial dreadlocks," she says. "I was thinking, by the time I take them out, my hair will have turned natural. It didn't work out."

Her hair type is 4C&nbsp; dense, tight, and specific in what it needs. She didn't know that then. She used a regular leave-in conditioner she picked off a shelf, had no idea what tools to buy, and within two months, she was done.

"I relaxed my hair back," she says, simply. No drama. Just facts.

But the thing about giving up once is that you never fully forget why you tried in the first place. Years after university, she came back to the question&nbsp; except this time, she approached it like the safety specialist she is. Methodically. With research.

"I went back to the drawing board. I read everything about 4C hair. What are the right tools? What products does my hair actually need? What did I do wrong the first time?"

The answer, it turned out, came down to tools. Wide-tooth combs. Afro combs. Paddle brushes&nbsp; the kind designed for tight coils, not the fine-tooth combs that snap and break them. Nobody had told her this the first time. And when she sourced them, applied what she'd learned, and started treating her hair with the patience it required, everything changed.

Let's talk numbers. Because this is also a money story.

Francisca started Curls and Tresses from her room. No store, no warehouse, no seed funding. Just a product she had found genuinely useful, a network of suppliers she started reaching out to, and a WhatsApp status that said: Curls and Tresses is coming.

The brand now has a physical store in Lagos, ships products across Nigeria, and has served over a thousand customers. She also runs it from Canada, where she currently lives with her husband and their baby.

The economics, she says, are mostly manageable&nbsp; except for one thing that is absolutely not manageable.

"Logistics," she says, without hesitation. "That is my biggest concern."

The numbers are painful to hear. Shipping from Lagos to Abuja can cost close to ₦10,000. If you're selling a product for ₦15,000, you have already lost most of your margin before the customer even opens the package. Within Lagos, deliveries routinely hit ₦6,000 to ₦7,000.

"Imagine running a business and shipping takes up that much," she says. "If we could crack the code on logistics in Nigeria, it would transform what small business owners can do. For me, it is the one thing I would change."

She has found workarounds. She attends physical events and fairs&nbsp; mostly on weekends, which keeps conflicts with her 9-to-5 rare. She batch-creates content to avoid the daily pressure of posting. She uses AI tools and Canva to compress the time it takes to produce. She has her husband, who steps in with their child when she needs to film.

"I'm not balancing anything," she says, when people ask how she does it all. "If you love something, it doesn't become a burden. I enjoy this. It comes naturally."

What She's Actually Selling (and Why Women Keep Coming Back)

Curls and Tresses is a hair care brand, yes. But what it's really selling is something harder to find: the knowledge to understand your own hair.

The product range is intentional and uncluttered&nbsp; a selection of specialist tools (wide-tooth combs, afro combs, paddle brushes) and a small line of cream products. Francisca made a deliberate choice not to stock twenty different serums and oils.

"You don't need ten wash day steps," she says. "You don't need fifteen products. Find out what your hair needs and give it that. That's it."

She has watched women damage their hair in every possible way&nbsp; using products recommended by influencers without checking their own hair type, going to salons that look beautiful on Instagram but have no idea how to handle 4C texture, detangling aggressively and wondering why their hair keeps breaking.

"One of the biggest mistakes is not wanting to learn about your own hair," she says. "People assume natural hair is hard to manage. It is not. But it needs patience. It needs the right tools. And it needs you to know at least the basics so that when a salon does something wrong, you can speak up."

The brand also provides step-by-step hair care guidance on how to take down cornrows without breakage, how to detangle properly, how to build a sustainable wash day routine. For many of her customers, that education has been as valuable as any product she's sold.

The Night the Landlord Almost Ended Everything

Last year, Francisca was already stressed. The economy was doing what the Nigerian economy does. Costs were rising. The pressure of running a business across two countries was building. And then her Lagos store landlord delivered the news: his daughter needed the space. They had to vacate.

Never mind that they had recently renewed the rent. Never mind that they had invested in the interior, made it look good, made it feel like something.

"I was so frustrated," she says. "I thought, this is a sign. Once we finish the Beauty in the Motherland event, I'm just going to close the Nigerian side and keep the business only in Canada."

She posted about it on Instagram. Moving. Packing up. See you.

"I got so many DMs. So many comments. People checking in&nbsp; where are you going, when are you coming back, we are waiting. That was the day I realised I had actually built a community."

People were waiting to buy products. Customers who hadn't heard from the brand in weeks were reaching out. Strangers who had started as customers had, somewhere along the way, become invested in Curls and Tresses surviving.

"That day," she says quietly, "I realised how powerful social media can be. Not for the noise&nbsp; but for that. For people holding you up when you're ready to let go."

The Moments That Made Her Cry (in a Good Way)

Ask Francisca for her most emotional memory from building the brand and she gives you two.

The first: a neighbour in Canada approached her about a product. When Francisca pressed for details, she learned that a woman, someone she'd never met, had been struggling with alopecia. I tried product after product. Nothing worked. Then she tried Curls and Tresses

"When she sent me photos of her hair journey&nbsp; before and after&nbsp; I just broke down," Francisca says. "That is what this is really about. Helping women get their confidence back. Because when something is wrong with your hair, you cover it every single day. You feel like you can't go out. And when something finally works..."

She doesn't finish the sentence. She doesn't need to.

The second memory is quieter. A secondary school friend sent her a message out of nowhere. Her hairstylist, in Ilorin, was using Curls and Tresses combs.

"A brand I started from my room," Francisca says, laughing. "All the way in Ilorin, a hairstylist is using my combs and someone just randomly took a picture and sent it to me. Those little moments&nbsp; those are the ones that get me every time."

This year, Curls and Tresses is planning to move beyond products into conversations, talk shows and community events dedicated to natural hair. The emotional side. The cultural side. The confidence side. The things that a comb, no matter how good, cannot fix alone.

"We don't have enough real conversations about hair," she says. "Not just what to buy&nbsp; but what it means. What it costs women emotionally when they don't feel comfortable in their own hair. I want to create space for that."

As for the legacy she is building, she measures it the same way she measures everything: in women who finally understand their own coils. Women who walk into salons knowing what they need, who no longer feel at the mercy of whoever is holding the comb. Women who have learned, maybe for the first time, that their hair was never the problem.
