Cassy does not look like someone who spent the better part of year four of her relationship quietly frustrated in bed. She looks like someone who sorted it out, learned some things about herself in the process, and has absolutely no intention of keeping any of it to herself.

She's 29, lives in Lagos, works in marketing, and has been with Demi for five years. She says his name the way you say the name of someone you genuinely like, just easy but around year four, easy had crept into the bedroom in ways she was not accepting.

"Everything was fine," she says, and then immediately pulls a face. "And that was exactly the problem. Fine. We were having fine sex. Demi is a wonderful man, and I was having the most fine, predictable, I-already-know-what-song-is-coming-next sex of my life. I'd had more surprising meals."

She tried telling herself it was normal. That this is just what long relationships become. That she should be grateful for a man who shows up consistently and loves her well.

"And then I thought, why am I negotiating with myself? Why am I settling for fine when I could just... fix it?"

So she did, and she's here to tell us everything. Grab something to drink.

"It started with a text," Cassy says, like she's confessing something. "I was at work, it was a random Wednesday, and I just sent it. Something very specific. Something that made it extremely clear what the evening was going to look like."

She will not show us the text. We respect this.

"I had never done that before. In five years, I had never just initiated like that, in the middle of the day, with that level of detail. I think I was raised to wait to be wanted rather than to announce that I want. Which is mad when you think about it."

The response from Demi, she says, was immediate and enthusiastic. "He called me. He actually called me. From his office." She's laughing now. "I had been sitting on that power for five years."

The afternoon text became a thing. A regular thing. "There's something about spending six hours thinking about what's going to happen that makes the actual thing completely different. You show up already on fire. The foreplay starts at 2 pm. By evening we were — " she stops, grins, waves her hand. "You get the idea."

2. She Had the Conversation Over Pepper Soup and It Changed Everything

"I had been wanting to say certain things for probably two years. Two years of knowing exactly what I wanted and just not saying it. Which, looking back, is genuinely ridiculous."

The conversation happened at a suya spot, not at home, not in bed, "never in bed, terrible energy for that kind of talk, everyone is either too comfortable or too naked", somewhere public enough that nobody was going to get overly emotional about it.

"I just said, there are some things I want to try. Some things I want more of. Some things that I've been curious about. Not a complaint. Just a want. And I asked him the same question."

What came out of Demi's mouth surprised her. "He had a whole list. A WHOLE list. This man had been holding onto things. I was actually offended on behalf of the two years we'd wasted being polite to each other."

She points at us like she's making a public service announcement. "Have the conversation. I don't care how long you've been together. Especially if you've been together a long time, have it. What is the worst that happens? You find out your partner also has opinions? Good. That's good information."

This is the one she leans forward to tell us. The one that has the most weight behind it.

"I grew up understanding sex as something that happened to me rather than something I was an active participant in. Nobody taught me that I was allowed to have preferences, to direct things, to say, no, actually, like this. More of that. Stop doing that thing."

She had, over five years, been a generous and present partner, but she had not, she says, been fully honest about her own pleasure.

"I did my own research." She says this very calmly. "I spent time understanding my own body. What I actually respond to. What I'd been wanting and not asking for and then I brought that information into the bedroom and used it."

The first time she was fully, specifically vocal about what she wanted, Demi's response was — she pauses to find the right word — "overwhelmed. In a good way. He said he'd been wanting to know and hadn't known how to ask. For five years, we had been politely going about it when we could have just been talking."

She sits back. "The sex became genuinely good after that. Not fine. Good. Because I stopped waiting to receive and started deciding what I wanted."

4. She Evicted Them Both From the Bedroom

"We have a three-bedroom flat," Cassy says, with the energy of someone who has recently done an audit of their own resources and found them satisfactory. "Three bedrooms, a living room, a kitchen, a balcony. We had been using one room. One room for five years. Like we were being punished."

The first time they didn't make it to the bedroom, she says it felt almost accidental, a Friday night, a film nobody was watching, a couch that turned out to be perfectly functional. "Something about a different space just reset everything. The bedroom has a whole routine attached to it. A different room has no routine. You figure it out as you go, and that figuring out is half of the fun."

The kitchen counter has since been involved. The balcony, once. "It was night, nobody could see anything, and I will not be answering further questions about the balcony."

She also started suggesting hotels, not fancy ones, just somewhere that wasn't their flat. "A hotel room removes all the domesticity. There's no pile of laundry in the corner reminding you of things you need to do. It's just a room and the two of you and nothing else. I cannot recommend it enough. Even once every few months. It does something."

5. She Invested in the Atmosphere Like It Was Her Job

"I used to think setting the mood was something you did in secondary school. Candles and all that. Very amateur hour." She pauses. "I was wrong."

Cassy started treating nights they'd planned to be intimate like actual occasions. Not in an over-the-top way, just with intention. A playlist that wasn't the same shuffle they'd had since 2022. The right lighting. Actually getting ready, doing her skin, wearing something she felt incredible in.

"Not for him. This is important; it was for me. The version of me that feels good in her body shows up completely differently than the version that just rolled off the couch in whatever she's been wearing since noon. I needed to feel like myself first."

She also, and she says this with the matter-of-fact energy of someone sharing a recipe, started incorporating things into the atmosphere that she'd previously been too shy to suggest. New things. Ordered quietly from the internet. Introduced casually, like it was completely normal, because she had decided it was completely normal.

Demi's reaction to the first new introduction? "He looked at me like he was seeing me for the first time. Which, honestly, maybe he was. Maybe I was seeing myself for the first time, too."

She finishes her drink and looks genuinely content. Like someone who solved a problem that was bothering her and is pleased with the solution.

"The sex is better now than it has ever been," she says. "Better than year one. Year one, we were still performing for each other, trying to seem like we knew what we were doing. Now we actually know what we're doing. And more importantly" she grins, " we know what we like."

She stands up to leave and then turns back.

"Tell your readers to stop being polite in bed. It's not helping anyone."
