To Everyone Who Has Ever Stayed Too Long,&nbsp;

I am writing this from the other side. Not the bitter side, I want to be clear about that from the beginning because a bitter man's letter is not useful to anyone, it is just pain looking for company. I am writing from the healed side. The side where you wake up in the morning and recognise yourself again. The side where you look back at what you survived and feel something closer to gratitude than anger because at least now you know. At least now you can see it clearly.

I could not always see it clearly. For two years I could not see it at all.

I loved this woman. Deeply, genuinely, in the specific way that makes a Nigerian man who was raised to be composed voluntarily become someone who sends good morning texts and remembers her mother's birthday. I was all the way in, and because I was all the way in, I stayed longer than I should have, explained away things I should have confronted, and called patterns by gentler names so I did not have to deal with what they actually were.

I am writing this so you do not do what I did. So that when you see these things and some of you are seeing them right now, which is why you clicked this, you call them what they are and make the decision I took too long to make.

This woman had my passcode. I gave it to her willingly because I had nothing to hide, and she used it with the thoroughness of someone conducting an official investigation: old messages, contacts she did not recognise, following lists, liked posts from 2019. I was explaining myself for things that happened before she even knew I existed. The moment a relationship starts requiring you to answer for your entire history, you need to pay attention to what that moment is telling you.

2. She Made Every Disagreement A Competition

Everything to her was a competition with a winner and a loser, and she was always the winner. I once agreed with her in the middle of an argument, and she continued arguing because she had not finished making her points. I sat there in genuine confusion. We had arrived at the same place. There was nothing left to argue about. She did not accept this. A person who cannot let a disagreement end without total victory is not looking for understanding. They are looking for submission. Those are different things.

The "I'm fine" that meant the opposite. The "don't worry about coming" that meant please come. The vague messages designed to see how I would respond. I am a straightforward man. I take words at their value. I do not come with a decoder. When she said don't come I did not come, and she was hurt. I was confused, and we had a fight about something I was never actually told. This happened more times than I can count. Dearest reader, you cannot build something real with someone who communicates in puzzles and then grades you on whether you solved them.

4. She Had A Problem With Every Female In My Life

My sister. My colleagues. My course mate from university, whom I had not seen since 2018, but existed in my contacts and therefore existed as a problem. My doctor, my actual medical doctor who was treating my malaria, became a source of tension. I need you to understand that I was explaining a clinical appointment. No version of that situation should require explanation. When a woman cannot separate the people in your life from threats to her position in your life, she does not trust you and a relationship without trust is just two people performing a relationship.

She could take an event we had both attended and remember it completely differently with full conviction. I am not even exaggerating, her version was the only truth that existed. Arguments about things I had definitely said, definitely not said, definitely done, definitely not done. I started keeping notes. Not as ammunition, but to just confirm that I was still correctly remembering my own life. Dearest reader, the day you start documenting your own experiences to prove them to your partner is the day you need to have a very serious conversation with yourself about what is happening.

When I ‘annoyed’ her, she resorted to silence with weight and texture and a message inside it I was expected to decode. Days of it. Over things that a single honest conversation would have resolved in twenty minutes. Instead, I spent those days in a fog of anxiety, trying to identify my crime, apologising for things I was not certain I had done, confessing to things that were not accurate just to end it. That is not a relationship. That is a controlled environment. Recognise the difference.

Consistently late. Not Lagos-traffic late. Genuinely unbothered late. Ready to leave and then starting a new task late. Confirmed plans renegotiated at the last minute late. My time was treated as something available for redistribution without consultation. Over weeks this is inconvenient. Over months it is a statement. Over a year it is a declaration of how much your time, and by extension you, are valued.

8. She Spoke To Me Anyhow In Front Of People

There is a version of this I might have worked through privately. The version that happened in front of her friends, my friends, and once, in front of her mother, I have not entirely finished processing. I am not talking about ego. I am talking about basic regard. What a person shows you when an audience is present is often more honest than what they show you alone. She showed me something in those moments that I should have taken more seriously than I did.

Two years. One apology. I remember it specifically because of its rarity and because it came with enough qualifications to soften it considerably, but I received it in good faith because at that point I had not had one in eleven months. A person who cannot apologise is a person who cannot be wrong. A person who cannot be wrong cannot grow. A person who cannot grow cannot be a real partner. This is not complicated. I just did not want to accept it.

10. She Made Me Feel Guilty For My Life Before Her

Old friendships, old photographs, old stories from before we met, all of it became tension. She wanted access to a history she was not part of and simultaneously resented that the history existed. I could not remove twenty-something years of life that happened before she arrived in it. I tried explaining this. It did not resolve anything. My dearest reader, a person who resents your past is someone who wants to own your present completely, and that is control dressed in love's clothing.

This is the one that did the most damage. When she shared difficult things with me, I held them carefully, the way you hold things that matter. When we argued, those same things came back as weapons. Things I had shared in trust became evidence in disputes. This broke something in me that took a long time to repair. The part that decides whether a person is safe to be open with. Once that breaks, brother, it takes a very long time to come back. Guard it carefully. Pay attention to what people do with what you give them.

Her friend's boyfriend. Her cousin's husband. Men on Instagram whose full circumstances she did not know. I was measured against all of them regularly and found lacking in ways I was not previously aware were being assessed. There is a difference between encouraging your partner to grow and making him feel like he is perpetually not enough. One builds. The other erodes. She eroded. Slowly, consistently, in small amounts that individually seemed manageable until I looked at the total and understood what had been happening.

13. She Did Not Trust Me And It Had Nothing To Do With Me

This took me the longest to understand. The distrust was not mine to solve. She came into the relationship carrying something from somewhere I was not part of and placed it on me to manage. I tried. I was transparent, consistent, available, accountable. It was never enough because the problem was not actually me; it was something that had happened before me, somewhere else, that she had not dealt with. I understand this now with compassion. But dearest reader, you cannot heal someone else's wounds by bleeding from your own.&nbsp;

Every time I reached the point of clarity about what this was, something shifted. A good week. The version of her I fell for made a brief reappearance. Tears at the exact moment I had gathered the resolve. I am not saying this to be unkind because some of it was genuine. But the pattern was that every time I was close to the door, something pulled me back in, and I stayed much longer than was good for me and left much more depleted than I needed to be. Dearest reader, if leaving consistently feels impossible despite consistent reasons to go, pay attention to that feeling. It is telling you something important.

15. She Was A Different Person In The Beginning

This is the one I sat with longest. The woman I fell for was easy, funny, warm, and uncomplicated. I do not know where she went or whether she was fully real in the first place. The relationship started one way and became something else so gradually that I did not notice the distance between the two until I was already living entirely in the second version. This is the one that still visits me occasionally. Not with anger. With the particular quiet sadness of a man who loved something sincerely that may not have existed exactly as he understood it.

I have made my peace with it. It took time. It is done.

My dearest reader, I am not writing this to vilify her. She is a person who had her own wounds and her own story and her own reasons for being the way she was. I genuinely wish her well from a very comfortable distance. I am writing this because I spent two years calling these things by other names, love, complexity, work, compromise, when what they actually were was a consistent pattern that was costing me my peace, my confidence, and my sense of self.

You are allowed to leave something that is not working. You are allowed to name what you are experiencing without being told you are being too sensitive, too proud, or not trying hard enough. You are allowed to require basic respect, basic trust, and basic decency from the person you are giving your time and your heart to.

I know what it is to love someone and simultaneously know that staying is wrong. I know how long you can convince yourself that things will change. I know how much leaving costs even when leaving is clearly the right thing.

I left. Fourteen months ago. I am standing here whole, clear, genuinely okay, writing this letter to you.
