There is a stage of the breakup that nobody puts on the timeline. Not the crying stage, not the blocking stage, not the "I'm flourishing" situationship era. The stage where you look around your room and realise that this person, who is no longer your person, has left evidence of themselves scattered across your life like they paid rent here and forgot to collect their deposit.

A hoodie on the back of your chair. A book on your shelf with their handwriting inside the cover. A key that opens a door you no longer have access to. A gift from their mother that felt too spiritually risky to throw away. A charger that has been yours long enough that returning it now would be embarrassing for everyone involved.

Nobody talks about this stage. Nobody talks about the quiet, unspoken agreement where neither of you asks for anything back because asking means contact and contact means a conversation and the conversation means acknowledging that something ended and sometimes the hoodie is genuinely just easier to keep.

We asked 10 people what they still have. Nobody was fully prepared for this question. Several of them laughed first and then went quiet. Here is what they said.

1. Temi, 27 — A Winter Jacket. In Lagos. For Two Years.

Temi's ex left a jacket. Not a light jacket. Not a denim jacket you could argue has year-round utility. A full, heavy, proper winter coat he brought back from a trip to Canada. They broke up in March 2023. She has moved apartments since then. The jacket moved with her. It has its own hanger.

She has never worn it. Lagos has never once required it. It lives in the back of her wardrobe between her church clothes and a dress she bought for a party she never attended.

When we asked why she still has it after two years she looked at us and said: "It just never came up."

Temi. It is a winter coat. In Lagos. It has never come up because there is no weather in which it could come up and yet here we all are.

2. David, 25 — His Ex-Girlfriend's Body Lotion. The Expensive One.

David has his ex-girlfriend's body lotion. Not a travel size. The full 400ml of something that costs enough that she definitely noticed it was missing and definitely chose not to ask for it back rather than have that conversation.

He uses it. Regularly. His skin, he reports, has never been better.

"It was just there," he told us, with the energy of a man who has made peace with his choices. "I didn't ask her to leave it. She left it. Am I supposed to let it expire?"

We asked if he felt any guilt using it.&nbsp; "My skin looks amazing," he said "She would want this for me."

She would not want this for him but his skin does look amazing and we respect the commitment.

3. Ngozi, 29 — His Mother's Tupperware. With His Mother's Name On It.

His mother sent her son food the way Nigerian mothers do, in proper Tupperware, labelled, with her name written on the bottom in permanent marker because she has been burned before and she is not being burned again. The food arrived at his place. Ngozi was there. She took some of the food with her in the Tupperware.

They broke up four months later. The Tupperware did not leave with her. Ngozi thinks about returning it. She thinks about calling him. She thinks about what she would say and how that conversation would go and whether his mother knows her Tupperware is missing and whether she has been asking questions.

"His mother's name is on it," she told us, visibly stressed. "What if she thinks I stole it? What if she's been looking for it? What if this Tupperware is the reason that family doesn't like me?"

Ngozi. That family doesn't know you have the Tupperware. Return the Tupperware before they find out. This is not a situation you want to escalate.

4. Chidi, 31 — A Book He Will Never Read But Will Not Give Back.

His ex left a book. Not a book she lent him. A book that was hers, that she had been meaning to read, that she talked about with the specific enthusiasm of someone who buys books faster than they finish them. Chidi read it. It was excellent. He is not giving it back.

"I watered it," he said, and then corrected himself. "I mean I read it. I invested time in it. It lives here now."

He has recommended it to four people since the breakup. He has not mentioned where it came from. When we pointed out that her name was written inside the cover he said, "That's just history." Chidi is going to keep that book. We have accepted this.

5. Sade, 24 — A Spare Key To An Apartment That No Longer Exists.

He gave her a key early in the relationship because that's what people do when they're in love and not thinking about logistics. She never gave it back. He moved apartments seven months after the breakup which means the key now opens absolutely nothing anywhere in Lagos.

It is still on her keyring. Between her house key and her office key. Going everywhere with her. Opening nothing.

"I keep meaning to take it off," she said.

We believe her. We also think that a key you can't use but can't remove is doing a specific kind of emotional work that has nothing to do with security systems. We did not say this to her face. She is doing fine.

6. Emeka, 33 — Four Seasons Of A Show They Never Finished. On Her Account.

Not a physical thing. A shared Netflix account, still active, still in her name, still charging her card ₦4,200 every month. They broke up nine months ago. Neither of them has addressed the account. He is currently on season three of something she started watching before they met.

"She hasn't removed me," he told us, with the calm of a man who has decided not to examine this too closely. "I'm not going to be the one to bring it up."

We asked if he thinks she knows he's still using it.

"She watches true crime," he said. "She definitely knows."

She knows, Emeka. She absolutely knows. The account is still active because one of you has to be the person who ends it and neither of you wants to be that person. You are both paying emotional rent on a Netflix account and calling it moving on.

7. Bimpe, 26 — A Perfume She Bought Him That He Left On Purpose. She Suspects.

She bought him perfume for his birthday. Not cheap perfume. The kind that requires a decision and a budget and a specific opinion about who someone is. He left it when he moved his things out. Left it deliberately, she believes, in the way you leave something when you want the other person to have something to remember you by without having to say that out loud.

She has kept it. She does not wear it. It sits on her dresser and occasionally, without planning to, she opens it.

"It doesn't mean anything," she told us immediately. Without being asked. "I just haven't thrown it away."

It has been sixteen months, Bimpe. At some point keeping something this long stops being inertia and becomes a choice. We are not here to rush her. We are just noting the timeline.

8. Kunle, 28 — Her Charger. Which Is Now His Charger. Legally, Morally, Spiritually.

It started as her charger. She left it at his place once and said she'd pick it up. She never picked it up. He used it once. Then again. Then it became the charger he used when his own charger was in the other room. Then his charger broke and her charger became the charger. That was a year and three months ago.

"At what point does a charger change ownership?" he asked us, genuinely. "Is there a law? Is there a timeframe?"

We don't know, Kunle. But we think that when you have used something daily for over a year and the original owner has not asked for it back, something has shifted in the universe. The charger is yours now. We are granting you the charger. Go in peace.

9. Amara, 30 — A Plant He Left "Temporarily" Eleven Months Ago.

He was moving. He couldn't take it. He said he'd come back for it once he was settled. He has not come back. He has not asked about it. Amara suspects he has forgotten it exists.

The plant does not know any of this. The plant is thriving. Amara has repotted it once, named it, and positioned it in the best light spot in her apartment with the focused dedication of someone who has transferred their nurturing energy somewhere it is actually appreciated.

"He didn't deserve that plant," she told us.

When we asked what she named it she said "Gerald" without hesitating and we felt that Gerald was exactly the right name and that Gerald is exactly where he needs to be.

Of course it ends here. It always ends here. Tobi has his ex-girlfriend's hoodie. She knows he has it. He knows she knows. They broke up eleven months ago and have not spoken since and the hoodie has not come up once in eleven months of silence because the hoodie was never really about the hoodie and both of them have always known that.

He did not tell us this with a laugh. He told us quietly, in the way you talk about something you have thought about more than you want to admit.

It is soft. It smells like her detergent now, not her, which is either better or worse depending on the night. He wears it when he is sick, or tired, or when Lagos has been too much and he needs something that feels like a version of comfort he doesn't have language for anymore. He has washed it six times. It is his now in every way except the one that matters.

She has not asked for it back. He does not think she will. He does not know what he will do with it when he is finally, fully, completely over her. He is not there yet. The hoodie stays.

Here is what we learned from asking these ten people: nobody keeps a winter coat in Lagos because they need a winter coat. Nobody keeps a key that opens nothing. Nobody names a plant Gerald and gives it the best light in the apartment because they are simply a plant enthusiast.

We keep things because letting go is its own kind of loss, because some endings don't come with a clean handover, because love, even after it has technically finished, leaves things behind, in your space, in your wardrobe or in the back of your drawer.

And that is okay. You don't have to return everything immediately. You don't have to have it all figured out.&nbsp;
