How much of who you are right now is actually you… and how much of it is your relationship?

Most people don’t even realise it’s happening while it’s happening. You don’t wake up one day and decide to lose yourself; there’s no big moment where you announce it to yourself. You just adjust, slowly and quietly, in ways that don’t feel important at the time. You stop saying certain things because it leads to arguments. You start liking things you didn’t care about before. You become easier, more agreeable, less likely to push back, less likely to disrupt the peace.

None of it feels dramatic. It feels like love, like compromise, like this is just what relationships require. Until you’re somewhere without them and you notice something is different. You’re talking differently, laughing more, saying things you would normally hold back. You feel lighter, like you’ve stepped into a version of yourself you haven’t seen in a while, and it’s subtle, but it’s enough to make you pause.

You have done something that is genuinely difficult to do: you have stayed whole inside a relationship. You have maintained the friendships, the opinions, the private corners of your life that belong to no one else. This does not mean you love less. Mostly D's — You Need to Hear This Plainly

The person you were before this relationship, with their specific laugh, their unedited opinions, their way of walking into a room, has not been seen in a long time. You know this. You have known it for a while. You have just been very skilled at not looking directly at it.

This is not a verdict on your relationship. The slow erasure of self happens in the most loving, most functional, most well-intentioned partnerships in the world. Warmth does not make it harmless. Being loved does not mean you are not disappearing.
