And as I stare at my phone watching him type another paragraph-long text about who said what and who hurt who first, I ask myself: Why can't either of us just let go?

Yes, I love him. He loves me too. I know he does, but I don't love this relationship anymore.&nbsp;

I don't love how it makes me doubt myself. I don't love how small I feel when we argue. I don't love the silence that fills my chest when I ask myself if I actually want to end up with this person.

And I think he feels the same way. I see it in how he picks fights over nothing. In how he brings up old wounds we've already apologized for. In how exhausted he sounds when we have the same conversation for the tenth time.

We're both tired. We both know this isn't working. But neither of us will say it.

The Real Reason We Can't Let Go of Dead Relationships

Do I think we can work it out? Maybe. That's probably why I'm still here. That's probably why he's still here too.

But deep down, I know we can't. I know we're damaged beyond repair. I know we've grown incompatible in ways we'll never admit out loud.

It's not because he gives me money or takes care of me. It's not because I'm the perfect girlfriend who makes his life easier.

It's because we're emotionally attached to a version of this relationship that doesn't exist anymore.

I'm not ready to let go of the person he was two years ago, the one who texted me good morning without me asking, who remembered my favorite things, who made me feel like I was the most important person in his world.

That version of him is gone. I know it is. But I'm still holding on to the memory of it like it's proof that this relationship was worth something.

And I think he's doing the same thing, holding on to the version of me who was easier to love. The one who didn't pick fights. The one who laughed at his jokes instead of rolling her eyes. The one who didn't feel this... heavy.

When Love Isn't Enough to Save a Relationship

I believe him when he says he loves me. I do. Because I love him too but love isn't enough. Love hasn't been enough for months now.

We've had the conversation. Multiple times. "We need to communicate better." "We need to try harder." "We can't keep doing this."

And yet here we are. Again. Staring at another wall of text. Another fight about nothing and everything at once.

As I scroll through his message, watching him justify, defend, and explain, I ask myself a question I've been avoiding:

Why I Want Him to Break Up With Me (Instead of Doing It Myself)

Yes, I would cry. Yes, I might even beg him to reconsider. Yes, I'd probably text him drunk in two weeks, asking if we made a mistake.

I want him to be the one to say, "This isn't working." I want him to close the door, so I don't have to. Because I'm not strong enough to do it myself.

And I think, deep down, he wants the same thing from me.

We're both waiting for the other person to be brave enough to walk away. We're both hoping the other one will end it so we don't have to carry the guilt.

Because if he ends it, I'm not the bad guy. I didn't give up. I tried.

But if I end it? I'm the one who broke his heart. I'm the one who gave up on us. The one who couldn't make it work.

And he's probably thinking the exact same thing.

The Fear That Keeps Couples in Relationships That Are Already Over

So we stay. Locked in this exhausting cycle. Fighting about the same things. Apologizing without meaning it. Saying "I love you" like it's supposed to fix everything when we both know it won't.

We're not staying because the relationship is good. We're staying because we're scared.

Scared of being alone. Scared of starting over. Scared of admitting we wasted years on something that was already dead.

Scared that if we let go, we'll regret it. Scared that if we stay, we'll resent each other.

We're trapped. Not by love. But by the fear of what comes after.

And the worst part? I know all of this. He probably knows it too.

Because saying it makes it real and making it real means we have to do something about it.

So we keep fighting. Keep apologizing. Keep pretending that "we'll work it out" actually means something this time.

Should You Stay in a Relationship You Know Is Over?

Is staying in a relationship you know is over worse than being the one to end it?

Is it selfish to wait for him to do it? Or is it just self-preservation?

Are we both cowards? Or are we both just human?

What if we're supposed to end it, but we're also supposed to be the ones who fight for it?

What if love is enough, and&nbsp; we're just not trying hard enough?

What if we walk away and regret it for the rest of our lives?

What if we stay and waste years we'll never get back?

All I know is that right now, in this moment, I don't want to end it.

But I also don't want to stay and I have no idea what that makes me.
