Priye has been dating Chioma for 2 years and he sends her ₦250,000 every month, before anything else leaves his account. She has a job. She earns her own money but she expects the allowance every month. We sat down with both of them, separately, to understand how this actually works.

This is Chioma and Priye's story, as told to us.

Priye, how did you and Chioma actually meet?

Shoprite, of all places. Her card got declined at checkout, twice, and the cashier was getting a bit impatient with her, you could see she was embarrassed. I just stepped forward and paid for everything without thinking twice about it. I'm not the type of man who can watch a woman struggle publicly when I clearly have the means to fix it in thirty seconds. We exchanged numbers after that, nothing dramatic, just a normal conversation, and I kept it going from there.

Chioma, what was your honest first impression of him?

I swear I had money in that account, my bank was just messing up as usual, then he came in and saved the day. I wasn't even that impressed initially, if I'm being completely honest with you. He had this energy that felt almost rehearsed, like he'd done the "rescue the embarrassed woman" move before and knew exactly how it would land. I took his number mostly to be polite and get out of that situation quickly. It was mortifying for me at the time, my card declining like that in front of strangers, but looking back now it's actually a funny story we tell people.

Priye, when did you start sending her money, and why?

It wasn't a big formal conversation, nothing planned. About four months into dating, I just started sending money regularly. She never asked for a monthly allowance, not once, I want that on record clearly. I just felt, this is my woman now, why should she be calculating data and transport money when I have more than enough to handle that for her without even feeling it myself. The first time I sent something significant, she actually tried to send it back to me, which honestly endeared her to me even more. I told her, this is just what I do for the people I love, full stop, end of discussion.

Chioma, what was it like for you, watching the gifts and money start coming?

It was a lot, almost too much at first. Pizza one random Tuesday evening I never asked for. Data top-ups whenever my status mentioned network issues. Small things, consistently, not flashy, just persistent. I told my friends, this man is suspicious, nobody does this much for free, there must be a catch somewhere but eventually I just thought, okay, he's clearly serious about this, he's not playing games with me, and once you get past how intense he can be, he's actually a really good person underneath it all. So I gave him a real chance.

Priye, at what point did the money become a fixed monthly thing instead of occasional gifts?

Around month six, I'd say. I just decided, instead of sending random amounts whenever I felt like it, let me set a proper structure so she's not left waiting on my mood or whether I remembered. ₦250k, sent on the first of every month, without fail. To me, that was responsibility. That was me stepping fully into the role of a serious partner, not just a boyfriend who shows up with gifts occasionally to look good in front of people.

Chioma, at what point did you start expecting it as a given?

For me it became expected simply because it became so consistent. When something happens like clockwork for over a year, your brain eventually just files it away as a fact of your life, not as a special favour anymore. I won't pretend I think of it as charity at this point, that would be dishonest of me. I think of it as him doing his part in this relationship, the way I do mine in other ways that matter just as much.

Priye, you've said before that a man who doesn't spend on a woman probably doesn't love her. Can you explain that belief properly?

I'll say it again, clearly, because I stand on it completely, and I'm not going to soften it just because it might sound controversial. If a man claims to love a woman and he's not providing for her in some tangible, consistent way, something doesn't add up, either his finances aren't where they should be, or his intentions toward her aren't fully real. I'm not saying money equals love in some shallow way. I'm saying love without provision is just talk, and talk is genuinely cheap. Anybody can talk.

I'll be completely honest with you, when I take proper care of Chioma financially, I see a real, visible difference in how she carries herself around me. She's calmer. She doesn't sweat the small things the way I've seen some women do when they're financially stressed in a relationship. There's a particular kind of peace that comes with a woman knowing she's fully covered, knowing her man genuinely has her back. I'm not ashamed to say that, even if it sounds old-fashioned to some people listening to this.

Chioma, does that "peace" Priye describes ever look like you simply not pushing back as much as you might otherwise?

It's normal, and I genuinely believe this without shame, to adjust certain parts of yourself when you're in a serious relationship with someone who takes care of you the way he does. I want to choose my words carefully here, because I know exactly how this can sound from the outside. I haven't changed who I fundamentally am at my core. I'm still me, completely but yes, there are definitely things I just don't do anymore, or don't fight as hard for, things I probably would have pushed much harder on with someone else, or with a younger, more hot-headed version of myself.

Priye, does it ever feel like leverage, even unintentionally, when conflict comes up between you two?

I want to say no straight away, but let me actually think about that properly, since you're asking me directly. I think there's a version of me that notices when she pushes back on something, an opinion, a request, whatever it is, and somewhere in my head there's this small voice that goes, "after all I do for her." I don't say it out loud to her, ever. I'm not particularly proud of that thought even existing in my head. But yes, if I'm being completely honest with you right now, it's there sometimes, quietly.

Chioma, can you give me a specific, real example of something you've let go that you wouldn't have before?

Okay, honestly, I used to argue my points a lot more aggressively in past relationships, even over things that, looking back now, genuinely didn't matter in the grand scheme of anything. With Priye, I've learned to pick my battles very differently, let certain things go much faster than my natural instinct would normally allow. I want to be very clear though, I would never describe that shift as losing myself, or losing my free will entirely, that feels far too dramatic, and honestly, a little insulting to how I see myself. I'd call it growing up, maturing, genuinely learning what's worth the stress in a real relationship and what simply isn't.

Priye, do you and Chioma ever talk about this dynamic directly, the way we're talking about it right now?

Never quite like this, honestly. This is actually the first time I'm hearing some of what she's told you, sitting here right now in this conversation.

Chioma, same question to you. Do you two ever sit down and dissect this?

Never like this, no, not even close. We don't typically sit down and dissect things this deeply between us. It mostly just runs quietly in the background of our day to day life, and I think, if I'm being fully honest, we both benefit somewhat from not poking at it too hard or too often.

Priye, if the allowance stopped completely tomorrow, what do you think would actually change between you two?

Honestly? I think I'd feel like less of a man in this relationship, not because she'd ever make me feel that way deliberately, but because some part of my own identity here is genuinely tied to being the provider. That's something on me to work through internally, not something I'd ever put on her shoulders.

Chioma, same question. If it stopped tomorrow, what changes for you?

I think I'd feel a very sudden loss of comfort, obviously, financially speaking, that part is just practical reality but I also find myself wondering right now, and I haven't really sat with this thought properly until this exact moment, whether I'd start engaging with him differently as a result. More like an actual equal partner negotiating things side by side, rather than someone simply receiving and accommodating constantly. I genuinely don't know, sitting here, which version of us would feel more real.

Priye, if you were single again and met a woman with no financial needs at all, would you still feel compelled to provide this way?

Yes, without question. This isn't about her specifically needing it, it's about who I am as a man and how I choose to express love. Even if she earned ten times what I earn, I'd still want to contribute financially in some way, because for me, that's simply part of showing up fully in a relationship.

Chioma, if you met someone equally loving, equally good to you, but there was no allowance involved at all, would anything feel different?

(takes a long breath before answering) Honestly, I don't see myself ever leaving Priye for anyone else, so this question feels a bit theoretical for me personally. But speaking more generally, about relationships as a whole, not specifically us, I do think a serious relationship with absolutely zero financial contribution from a man would be difficult for me to fully settle into emotionally. I'm not saying I need to be constantly spoiled. I'm saying I believe, deep down, that real partnership includes a man contributing financially in some consistent, visible way. Call it old-fashioned if you want, plenty of people probably will after reading this. I still believe it fully.

Priye, last question. Is this love, or is this a retainer?

It's love, expressed the proper way, the way a serious man is supposed to express it toward the woman he's chosen. I don't separate the two concepts in my mind at all, honestly, they're the same thing to me.

Chioma, same question to close. Is this love, or is this a retainer?

It's love, genuinely, and I won't sit here and let anyone reduce my relationship to some cold transaction just because there's structure and consistency built into it. But I'll admit something to you honestly, sitting here, listening to myself answer some of these questions out loud for what feels like the first time, I'm hearing things about my own choices that I haven't really said out loud before, even privately to myself. Maybe there's more sitting underneath all of this than I usually allow myself to look at too closely.

We spoke to a relationship therapist about dynamics like Chioma and Priye's, and she did not hold back on her observations.

On Priye's framing, that consistent financial provision produces a woman who is "calmer" and less likely to be "difficult," she was direct and unflinching. This, she explained, is a textbook description of financial dynamics functioning as behavioural control, regardless of whether either partner consciously labels it that way in their own minds. When one partner directly links financial support to the other partner's compliance, even in cheerful, well-intentioned, almost loving language, that is not simply a pleasant side effect of generosity. That is the actual operating mechanism of the relationship, functioning exactly as designed, whether or not anyone sat down and deliberately designed it that way.

On Chioma's responses, she flagged something specific worth sitting with. The language of "picking battles" and "growing" is extremely common, almost universal, in relationships with significant power imbalances, financial or otherwise. It allows the person on the receiving end to reframe ongoing accommodation as personal maturity rather than as an actual, measurable loss of negotiating power. She noted that Chioma's own admission, that she used to push back far more in previous relationships and has since learned to let things go faster specifically with Priye, is one of the clearest indicators in this conversation that something real has genuinely shifted in her behaviour, regardless of the gentler language she's chosen to describe it with.

On Chioma's insistence that any future serious relationship would require consistent financial support to feel genuinely secure, the therapist offered a more layered take. Wanting a partner who contributes financially isn't inherently unhealthy on its own, many cultures and individuals reasonably value that as a normal part of real partnership. The actual concern is narrower and sharper. When financial contribution becomes positioned as a non-negotiable prerequisite for feeling safe or valued in a relationship, rather than one factor among several, it can quietly train a person to tolerate behaviour they otherwise wouldn't accept, simply because the financial need is being so consistently met elsewhere. The real question worth sitting with isn't whether Priye is generous, he clearly is. It's whether Chioma would feel equally safe telling him no on the one month the money didn't show up.
