Two years of celibacy. Two years of him telling me it was about faith, about discipline, about waiting for marriage like good Christians do. Three weeks after the wedding, I packed my bags and left. Not because we didn't have sex. Because he knew, the entire time, that we might never be able to, and he let me build a whole life around him without giving me the one piece of information that actually mattered.

You dated for two years before getting married. Tell me about that period.

We were both very vocal about being celibate, very proud of it actually. He used to call himself my "covering," talked a lot about discipline and self-control, about how we were going to enjoy each other fully once we were married, the way God intended. I believed every word of it, completely. I was proud of us. I'd tell my friends our story like it was something worth admiring, and honestly, I loved him for it. I loved him for a lot of things, his patience, the way he prayed with me, how he showed up for my family during a really hard season when my father was sick. He wasn't a villain to me. He was my person. I need that to be understood before anything else in this story.

When did you first sense something was wrong?

Our wedding night. We'd just had the most beautiful day of my life, I was tired, happy, a little tipsy from the champagne at the reception, and I was genuinely looking forward to what I thought we were finally going to share after two years of waiting. Nothing happened. He said he was exhausted from the day. I held him and told him it was fine, completely understandable, weddings drain everybody.

The second night, the same thing happened, a different excuse. By the fourth night, I stopped just accepting his explanations and started actually paying attention. He wasn't simply tired. He was avoiding me physically in a very specific, deliberate way, and every single time things got close, he'd find a reason to pull back.

What happened when you finally addressed it directly?

I asked him plainly if he was attracted to me. He said of course he was, immediately, like the question hurt him. I asked if something was wrong physically. He went quiet for a long time, the longest silence of my entire life up to that point, and then he admitted he sometimes struggles to, in his words, "perform," and that he'd known about it for a while but had hoped it would simply resolve itself once we were married and the pressure of waiting was finally gone.

I sat there doing the maths in my head, slowly, painfully. Two years. Two years of "we're waiting for marriage" when the actual truth underneath it was that he wasn't even certain he could, and he never once gave me that information. He let me believe this was about virtue, about both of us choosing something sacred together. It was never just that. It was also him being too afraid to say four honest sentences to the woman he claimed to love, and choosing scripture as a hiding place instead.

I genuinely tried, and I need people to know that, because I refuse to let this sound like I gave up at the first sign of difficulty. I loved him. I wanted this to work more than I have ever wanted anything else in my life. We tried for almost three weeks. I read everything I could find about erectile dysfunction, how common it actually is, how treatable it often is. I found a specific urologist and a sex therapist and brought their names and numbers to him myself, gently, with no judgment in my voice, because I genuinely believed we could fix this together.

He refused, every single time I brought it up. He'd get defensive, accuse me of making him feel like less of a man, tell me I was being insensitive about something he was clearly already struggling with internally and I do still have compassion for what he was going through. That part was real, and it's an extremely hard thing for any man to sit with but his response to his own pain was to do absolutely nothing, refuse every avenue of help I offered, and quietly expect me to accept an indefinite, sexless marriage with no plan and no timeline, while I slowly fell apart trying to hold both of us together.

What made you decide to actually leave, rather than keep trying longer?

It wasn't one single thing. It was waking up every single morning next to a man I loved deeply and feeling completely alone in my own marriage. It was the lie sitting between us like a third person in the room. It was watching him choose his fear over our future, over and over, every time I tried to open a door toward help.

Then there was something about myself I had to be honest about too, even though it felt almost shameful to admit at the time. I like sex. I always have. Pretending that desire would simply switch off because my husband couldn't perform and refused to seek help wasn't realistic for me, and pretending otherwise felt like one more lie added to a marriage that already had too many.

What happened when you told him you wanted to leave?

He cried properly, for the first time since I'd known him. He apologized, said he should have told me years earlier, and I believed that apology was genuine. But I also told him, gently, that genuine regret three weeks into a marriage doesn't erase two years of a decision to withhold something this significant from me.

Tell me about your family. You mentioned they got involved.

This was honestly harder than the marriage itself in some ways. The moment word got out that I wanted to leave, barely a month after the wedding, my family descended on me like I had committed a crime. My mother cried, not for me, but about what people would say. My aunties took turns calling me, one after another, like a relay team, asking what kind of small thing I was making a big deal out of, telling me marriage is hard for everybody, that I needed to pray more, that I was being too Western about this, too quick to give up.

His family came too, his mother specifically, sat in my parents' living room and told me, with a completely straight face, that I was abandoning her son in his weakest moment and that real women stay and "help" their husbands through difficulty. Nobody, not one single person in that room, asked him why he had hidden this from me for two years. The entire weight of fixing it, staying for it, suffering through it quietly, was placed on me, like I was the one who had done something wrong by simply wanting honesty before I married someone.

I sat in that living room and listened to people who loved me try to convince me that my own needs, my own right to have known the full truth before making the biggest decision of my life, were somehow selfish. It nearly worked. For about two days, I genuinely considered staying just to make the noise stop.

I looked at my life and asked myself one honest question: was I staying because I had actually resolved anything in my heart, or because I was tired of being shouted at by people who would go back to their own homes that night while I stayed in mine, alone, carrying this. The answer was obvious once I let myself actually hear it. I was not healed. I was just exhausted into silence, and exhaustion is not the same thing as peace.

So I left anyway. Quietly, without the dramatic exit people probably expected after all that noise. I packed my things on a Tuesday afternoon while he was at work, left a letter explaining everything calmly, and went to stay with a friend who never once asked me to defend my decision.

Do you regret marrying him, knowing everything now?

I regret not pushing harder, sooner, for the full truth instead of accepting "we're waiting for marriage" as a complete answer for two years. I don't regret marrying him entirely, because the love was real, and I learned things about patience and grace that I still carry. But I do not regret leaving. Not for one single day, even on the hard nights when I missed him so much it physically hurt. I don't think he's a bad person. I think he's a frightened one who made a cowardly choice, and there's a difference, but the difference didn't change what it cost me.

What would you say to other women who might find themselves in a similar situation?

Ask the uncomfortable questions early, and don't let vague spiritual language stand in as a complete answer when something in you senses that it isn't. "We're waiting for marriage" is a beautiful, valid choice when it's actually true for both people involved. It becomes something else entirely when it's a curtain one person is hiding behind.

Please, when the people who love you try to convince you that wanting honesty makes you selfish, that leaving makes you weak, that enduring silently makes you strong, ask yourself whose comfort they are actually protecting. Often, it isn't yours. You are allowed to love someone deeply and still choose to leave them. Those two things are not opposites. I loved my husband completely, and I still walked away, and both of those sentences are true at the same time. Don't let anyone convince you they can't be.

We spoke to a licensed sex therapist about situations like Adaeze's, and she had a lot to say.

On causes, she explained that erectile dysfunction in younger men is far more common than most people assume, and it rarely has anything to do with attraction. It can stem from performance anxiety, particularly in men who have spent years building up the moment of "finally" after a long period of abstinence, which ironically can create more pressure rather than less. 

It can also be linked to underlying health conditions like diabetes or cardiovascular issues that haven't been diagnosed yet, certain medications, chronic stress, anxiety or depression, pornography-related desensitisation in some cases, or even unresolved psychological factors tied to how a person was raised to view sex and their own body. In some cases, she noted, it's a combination of several of these at once, and it often takes a proper medical workup to even identify which factors are actually at play.

On whether women can know beforehand, she was candid: not always, and that's part of what makes situations like this so difficult. Many men genuinely don't disclose, even to themselves, the extent of a struggle until they're placed in a real situation where performance is expected. 

However, she pointed to certain patterns worth paying attention to during a long courtship, particularly extended avoidance of any physical intimacy beyond a certain point, even non-sexual touch, a partner who becomes defensive or shuts down completely whenever physical closeness or future intimacy comes up in conversation, or a pattern of redirecting every conversation about sex into purely spiritual or moral language without ever engaging with the practical side of the conversation at all. 

None of these guarantee a problem exists, she clarified, but a consistent pattern of deflection is different from someone simply being private or reserved, and the difference is usually felt by the partner long before it's explicitly named.

On what should have happened differently, she was clear that the failure here wasn't the condition itself, it was the secrecy around it. She strongly recommends that couples choosing celibacy before marriage, especially those doing so for an extended period, have an honest conversation with a doctor or therapist together before the wedding, not after. 

A basic medical evaluation, she said, removes guesswork, removes shame, and gives both partners real information to make a real decision with, rather than walking into a marriage on faith that everything will simply work out once the rules change. She was firm that celibacy itself is not the problem. Celibacy without honest communication about what either partner actually knows, suspects, or fears about their own body is where the real risk lives.

She left us with one last thought worth sitting with. There is no universal right answer for every couple in this exact situation, she said. Some marriages survive a revelation like this and grow stronger because both partners choose radical honesty and commit to treatment together. Others don't survive it, and that isn't automatically a failure, sometimes it's simply two people discovering, too late, that they needed information they were never given. The only real takeaway, she insisted, is that couples choosing to wait owe each other more than good intentions. They owe each other the truth, confirmed, medically if necessary, well before either of them says "I do."

So maybe sit with this the next time someone tells you they're "waiting for marriage." Maybe ask, gently but directly, what exactly they're waiting for. Because sometimes, the wait isn't about faith at all. Sometimes it's simply that things aren't standing up the way they're supposed to.
