What do you do when the man you love cannot give you the life you want?

Not because he doesn't try or because he doesn't love you back, but because love and Lagos rent are two completely different conversations and nobody prepared you for the moment they would stop being separable.

Not dramatically, not in a way I could explain to anyone without sounding shallow. Just tired in the quiet, persistent way of a woman who has been doing the math for too long and keeps getting the same answer.

He was funny in the way that made you forget what you were worried about. Not performing funny, not trying — just naturally, effortlessly, the kind of person whose company felt like exhaling. He remembered small things. The name of the colleague I complained about once in passing. The way I liked my pepper soup. The specific look I gave when I was pretending to be fine and wasn't. He paid attention in a way that made me feel like the most interesting person in any room we were ever in together.

He also could not plan a future to save his life.

Not because he was lazy. I need to say that clearly because this story is easy to flatten into something it isn't. He worked. He tried. He didn't say so but I knew, the way you know things about people you love without being told. And I sat across from him and felt two things simultaneously that I have never fully been able to separate since. Love, real and uncomplicated and completely unhelpful. What there is, is you, and whatever you were able to build, and whoever is standing next to you when things go wrong.

And things go wrong. In Nigeria, things go wrong constantly, suddenly, and without warning. A medical emergency that costs more than a year's salary. A job that disappears overnight. A family crisis that requires money you do not have. A future that needs to be funded by something more reliable than potential and good intentions.

When a Nigerian woman chooses security, she is not choosing a handbag. She is not choosing a lifestyle. She is choosing a buffer between herself and a system that was never designed to protect her. She is choosing the difference between a problem and a catastrophe. She is choosing, in the most practical and unglamorous sense, survival.

And we have the audacity to call her shallow for it.

The romance novels and the Nollywood films and the Instagram relationship goals content will tell you that love conquers all. Love is beautiful. Love is real. I am not arguing with any of that. But love does not conquer a hospital bill. Love does not conquer school fees. Love does not conquer the specific, grinding anxiety of a woman who does not know what next month looks like and has been not knowing for long enough that it has started to feel like a personality trait.

I loved that man. Completely. But I was also tired in my bones from carrying a future that only I seemed to be worried about. And when I looked at my options clearly, without the filter of romance, without the story I had been telling myself about potential and timing and miracles — what I saw was a woman who needed to make a decision her future self could survive.

Choosing security is not giving up on love. It is choosing a different kind of love. The kind that shows up as school fees paid on time. As a hospital visit that doesn't require a fundraiser. As the ability to say yes to your child without first calculating whether you can afford to. That is also love. It is just less cinematic. And in Nigeria, less cinematic is sometimes what keeps you alive.

I am not telling you to marry someone you cannot stand. I am not telling you that feelings are irrelevant or that you should spend your life with someone who makes you feel nothing. I am saying that the woman who factors security into her decision is not broken or unromantic or sellout. She is just honest. She is just living in the real world. And the real world, particularly this Nigerian one, does not run on feelings.

What Nobody Tells You About Choosing Security

Everyone has an opinion about this choice. Everyone.

Your friends who stayed with the man they loved and it worked out will tell you that you gave up too soon. Your friends who stayed and it didn't work out will not say anything because they are still processing. Your mother will tell you you did the right thing in the same breath she asks why you look tired. The internet will call you a golddigger or a pragmatist depending on which side of the argument they woke up on that day.

Because that is what it is. Grief. Not the loud kind, not the kind that announces itself and demands to be accommodated. The quiet kind that shows up in small moments when you are not prepared for it. A song. A joke that lands the way his jokes used to land. A night when your husband is kind and present and everything he promised to be and you are grateful, genuinely grateful, and also somewhere underneath the gratitude there is a feeling you do not have a clean name for.

I married the other man. The wedding was beautiful. My mother cried the right kind of tears. My husband looked at me the way he always looks at me, like the answer to a question he has been asking for a long time. And I stood there in a dress that cost more than a month of my former boyfriend's salary and I was happy. I was genuinely, actually happy.

And I was also, underneath the happiness, grieving something I had chosen to put down.

Both things were true. Both things are still true.

He is doing better now. I hear things. Lagos is small in the ways that matter and word travels. He found his footing. Something shifted. The miracle, or whatever version of it was available, arrived eventually.

I am glad. I want to be clear that I am completely, genuinely glad.

I am also not going to pretend that information arrived without feeling like something. Without sitting with it for longer than I should have. Without doing the thing where you imagine a version of events where you waited just a little longer and everything was different and then you close that door firmly because that road leads nowhere you are willing to go.

I think about him more than I should. Not every day. Not in a way that consumes me or threatens what I have built. Just in the way that certain things stay with you. The way first love stays with you even when it isn't your first love. The way some feelings don't expire, they just move to a quieter part of you and live there without making demands.

My husband is a good man. My life is a good life. I am not performing that — it is true and I am grateful for it.

But love — real love, the kind that has nothing to do with the economy or your five year plan or what Lagos Instagram says your life should look like — that kind of love does not negotiate. It does not check your account balance before deciding you deserve it. It does not time out just because you made a sensible decision.

It just sits there. In the back of your chest. Quiet and patient and completely unbothered by everything else you have going on.

And sometimes, on a certain kind of evening, when everything is fine and nothing is wrong and your life is exactly what you chose it to be, it taps you lightly on the shoulder just to remind you it was there.

Love is real. Love is also not a pension plan, not a hospital bill, not school fees. One Nigerian woman on the impossible choice between the man she loved and the future she needed.
