Every relationship has rules nobody else knows about. Not the big ones you discuss before marriage. Not "we must communicate" or "we should respect each other's boundaries." We mean the oddly specific rules that somehow appeared after months or years of being together and are now treated like federal law.

Some are sweet. Some are petty. Some are completely ridiculous. And some make you pause and think, Wait. Are we the only ones who don't have this rule?

We asked couples to tell us the private rules they have created for their relationships, the things they don't necessarily tell other people, but both understand must be followed.

1. "We Don't Tell Our Mothers About Our Fights"

Adaeze, 30, married for four years

"I don't care how serious the fight is. You can tell your friends, you can complain to yourself, you can even tell your sibling if you really need to, but don't call your mother." Adaeze learned this after her husband once involved his mother in an argument they had. "We had already settled the next day, but his mother had not. She called me and started asking me what I had done to her son. I was just there thinking, ma, this issue has expired."

Her husband apparently understood the assignment after that. "We made a rule that if we fight today and settle tomorrow, our mothers don't need to know what happened today because they will still be angry with each other tomorrow."

And honestly, this makes sense. You and your partner can have the most dramatic argument known to mankind at 11 p.m., apologise by breakfast, and be eating pancakes together by 9 a.m. Your mother, however, will remember that man insulted her daughter in 2026 when she is giving a speech at your child's graduation in 2041. Some information does not need to leave the relationship.

2. "No Talking To The Opposite Sex Past 10 p.m."

Tobi, 28, and his girlfriend, Amaka, 27

Their rule is very specific. "No unnecessary conversations with the opposite sex after 10 p.m.," Tobi says. Amaka immediately adds, "And unnecessary is the important word." They are not talking about work emergencies or family situations. They mean the random person who suddenly remembers you exist at 11:48 p.m. "You know those conversations that start with 'Are you still awake?'" Amaka says. "Why are you asking me that at midnight?"

Tobi laughs. "Our rule is basically that there are some conversations that don't need to happen at that time of night." They both insist it is not about controlling who the other person talks to. "It's about respecting the relationship. If someone is consistently trying to have private, late-night conversations with you, there is probably a reason." And yes, the rule applies to both of them. "It's not 'women can't talk to men.' It's both of us." Fair is fair.

3. "If You're Angry, Say You're Angry. Don't Start Doing FBI"

Their relationship has a strict rule against making the other person guess what is wrong. "If I'm upset, I tell him I'm upset," Favour says. "I don't suddenly start replying 'okay' and expect him to know what he has done." Daniel laughs. "She used to do that." "And did you enjoy it?" "No." Exactly.

Their rule is simple: you can ask for space, but you have to communicate that you need space. "I can say, 'I'm angry and I don't want to talk about this now.' That's different from ignoring you for six hours and expecting you to investigate my mood." Because emotional detective work is exhausting. Why did you say "fine" like that? Why did you view my message and not reply? Why did you close the door with that kind of force? Sometimes the person is just tired. Please rest.

4. "We Don't Go To Bed Angry. We Go To Bed Annoyed."

Tolu says her relationship has a slightly modified version of the popular "don't sleep angry" rule. "We don't necessarily solve everything before sleeping. Sometimes you're both too angry and tired to have a productive conversation." Her husband calls it their "annoyed but alive" policy. "You can be angry. You can say you need space. But you cannot use silence to punish the other person."

If they cannot resolve something that night, they agree to continue the conversation the next day. "We can say, 'I'm still upset, but I love you and we're going to talk about this tomorrow.'" Which is probably healthier than trying to solve a five-year relationship issue at 1:36 a.m. while both of you are hungry.

5. "If You Buy Food, You Must Think About Me."

Chisom, 29, and her boyfriend, Kene, 31

This is where things get serious. "If you know I'm at home and you buy food, you have to ask me if I want some," Chisom says. Kene nods. "She will say she's not hungry and then stare at me while I'm eating." "Because I'm angry, not dead."

Their food rule has become so established that certain purchases are automatically considered joint property. "Suya, chicken, shawarma, small chops. If you buy it and you know I'm around, don't eat it secretly." Kene says there is one exception. "Ice cream." Chisom looks at him. "Ice cream is different." "How?" "I might want all of it." At least there is honesty in this relationship.

6. "If You Do Something That Could Hurt Us, Don't Tell Me. Don't Let Me Find Out."

Nneka, 34, married for seven years

This one sounds controversial until she explains what she means. "I don't mean hide serious things from your partner," Nneka says. "I'm talking about stupid situations you already know are unnecessary." Her husband gives the example of someone flirting with you at a party. "If someone is clearly trying to get your attention and you know engaging them could create a problem in your relationship, why are you collecting the person's Instagram and then coming home to announce it?"

Nneka agrees. "Don't put yourself in situations that can hurt the relationship and then come back and say, 'But I told you.' Honesty doesn't make every behaviour acceptable." Their rule is basically: don't create problems just because you think you can confess them later. "If you know something is disrespectful, don't do it. Don't hide behind transparency." That might actually be one of the more mature rules on this list.

7. "We Don't Bring Five Old Arguments To A New One."

Their relationship operates under what they call the one-fight rule. "One problem at a time," Chinonso says. "If we're arguing about money, don't suddenly bring up what happened in 2022." Her husband laughs. "She will literally stop you and say, 'What are we discussing?'"

Because apparently, relationship arguments can become an archaeological excavation. "You came to complain because I forgot to pay a bill and suddenly we're discussing my behaviour at your sister's wedding three years ago." Her solution? "If it's still bothering you, bring it up separately. Don't keep old problems in your pocket and bring them out when you need ammunition." Honestly, this should be printed on wedding invitations.

8. "Your Vulnerabilities Are Not Weapons."

Some couples have rules about what happens during an argument. Ifeoma and her husband have a rule about what never gets said during one. "You don't use something your partner told you in confidence against them," she says. That includes insecurities, family issues, past experiences and things they shared during vulnerable moments. "If my husband tells me something because he trusts me, I can't wait until we're fighting and throw it back at him."

Her husband agrees. "You can be angry with someone and still protect them." That sentence probably deserves to be on a wall somewhere. Because sometimes the difference between a bad argument and a damaging one is knowing which line you could cross but choosing not to.

9. "We Say Goodbye Even When We're Angry."

This is one of those rules that sounds unnecessary until you hear why it exists. "Even when we're fighting, whoever is leaving the house says goodbye." Mide says they started doing it after her husband once stormed out during an argument without saying anything. "I called him five minutes later and asked why he didn't say bye." He apparently reminded her that she was angry. "And I said, 'So?'"

For her, it wasn't about pretending everything was fine. "I just didn't want silence to be the last thing between us." Now, no matter how annoyed they are, someone still says, "I'm going." And the other person says, "Okay. Bye." "You can still be angry. But we're still together."

Their rule came from too many arguments that started with one person assuming something and the other person having absolutely no idea what was happening. "If something bothers you, ask me," Yinka says. "Don't create the answer in your head and then come and fight me about it." Bolu laughs. "She is talking about one particular incident." "I am talking about several incidents."

Their rule now applies to everything. If something looks suspicious, ask. If you are unsure, ask. If you think your partner's behaviour has changed, ask. "Don't spend six hours building a case from someone's Instagram activity when you could just ask them what is going on." Because sometimes the mysterious reason your partner didn't reply for three hours is not another woman. Sometimes they were in a meeting. Sometimes they were sleeping. Sometimes they simply didn't see the message. And sometimes, yes, there is something wrong. But wouldn't it be better to know than to spend the entire afternoon directing a Nollywood film inside your head?

11. "You Cannot Be Angry With Me And Still Be Posting Online."

Dami, 28, and her boyfriend, Femi, 30

"This one is very simple," Dami says. "If we're fighting, don't go on Instagram and start posting motivational quotes." Femi laughs. "She used to do it." "Because you were annoying me." "But suddenly you're posting 'Protect your peace' at 9:43 p.m."

Dami says the rule came after she realised social media had become an extension of their arguments. "You're angry with me, then you post something clearly directed at me, and now I'm wondering whether your friends know we're fighting. It just creates unnecessary drama." So now? "If we're having a problem, we're having it at home. Don't go and turn it into content." Honestly, this rule may have saved several Nigerian relationships from becoming Twitter discourse.

12. "If One Person Says 'I Need You,' The Argument Is Over."

Nadia, 27, and her husband, Samuel, 31

They have a word that automatically pauses whatever disagreement they're having. "I need you." That's it. "It doesn't mean the problem disappears," Nadia explains. "It just means whatever we're fighting about can wait for a second because one of us needs the other."

Samuel says they've used it during some of the worst moments they've had together. "You can be angry and still need your person." And when that happens, the argument stops. "You don't ask questions first. You don't say, 'But you were just insulting me five minutes ago.' You show up." The conversation can continue later. "But in that moment, we're choosing each other." Okay. This one is actually beautiful.

13. "Nobody Leaves The Other Person Hanging After An Argument."

Kemi, 30, and her boyfriend, Kunle, 32

Their rule is that even if they need space, nobody disappears without saying when they'll come back to the conversation. "If I say I need two hours, he knows I'll come back in two hours," Kemi says. The same applies to him. "You can't just say 'I need space' and disappear for three days. What am I supposed to do with that information?"

Kunle agrees. "Space is not abandonment." Their rule is simple: take the space you need, but don't leave the other person guessing. Because there is a big difference between "I need tonight to calm down" and "I'll talk to you when I'm ready" followed by three business days of silence. One is communication. The other is psychological warfare.

14. "We Don't Embarrass Each Other In Public."

Blessing, 29, and her husband, Chuka, 34

This rule has one major principle: whatever happens at home, you don't humiliate your partner outside. "You can be angry with me," Blessing says. "You can tell me I was wrong. You can even tell me you don't like what I did. But you're not going to shout at me in front of people or make me look stupid." Chuka says the rule applies both ways. "If we have a serious issue, we deal with it privately."

They also have a rule about correcting each other. "If I'm doing something embarrassing, you can pull me aside and tell me," Blessing says. "Don't wait until we're with everybody and announce, 'This is what she always does.'" Because nothing makes an already bad day worse than your partner turning your mistake into a public presentation.

15. "If You Say You Don't Want Anything, I Will Ask You One More Time."

Rita, 26, and her boyfriend, Michael, 28

This is possibly the most Nigerian relationship rule on the list. "When I ask him if he wants anything and he says no, I ask one more time," Rita says. Michael laughs. "Because she knows I may say no even when I want something." "Exactly." The second question is the real question. "First one is polite. Second one is serious."

Michael says he has learned to be honest now. "Because if I say no twice and she buys something, I can't complain." There is also a reverse version. "If she says she doesn't want food, I know that sometimes means she doesn't want to ask me to buy it." So they have developed a system. "Ask twice. Confirm properly. Nobody should suffer because of pride." And perhaps this is the most Nigerian relationship advice of all: if you really want something, just say it.'

So, What Does Your Relationship Constitution Say?

The interesting thing about these rules is that none of them came from a relationship expert. Nobody gave these couples a handbook. They fought. They misunderstood each other. They made mistakes. They discovered what kept causing problems and eventually started creating their own little laws around them.

Some of the rules are serious. Some are adorable. Some are slightly controlling and would have another couple calling HR. Some are basically just common sense. And then there are the truly Nigerian ones: don't eat the last piece of chicken without asking, don't involve your mother in an argument you'll probably settle by tomorrow, don't say you're not hungry and then stare aggressively at your partner's food, and don't be chatting with somebody's daughter at 1 a.m. and call it friendship.

At the end of the day, every couple has a private language. A way of apologising. A way of fighting. A way of asking for space. A way of saying "I'm upset but I still love you." 

And probably a completely unreasonable rule that makes perfect sense to the two people involved.
