Even at 35, every morning I decide not to sweep because the parlour is actually not dirty, I hear my mother's voice in my head.

Ada, a good woman sweeps. That is the first thing she does when she wakes up.

This full, confident declaration, delivered in my mother's exact tone and cadence has been living rent-free since 1996.

I am Ada. First daughter, Owerri-raised, thirty-five years old, unmarried by the current count of everyone who sees me at Christmas, and very much in the middle of dismantling a belief system I was handed before I was old enough to ask questions. This series is about that. The dismantling. One lesson at a time.

We are starting with the broom because the broom is where it began.

The Broom, The Twins, and The Logic That Made Sense Once

When I was seven, sweeping every morning made complete sense. We had two toddler twins, my brothers Emeka and Ekene, and those boys were a daily natural disaster. Crumbs, sand, scattered toys, things that had no business being on a floor being on the floor. Sweeping every morning was not tradition, it was survival. I understood this. I participated without complaint.

Then I graduated secondary school. The twins went to boarding school. The parlour was, on most mornings, genuinely clean. Nobody had been in it. Nothing had happened. The floor looked exactly as it had looked the night before because I was the only person in the house and I had not, in my sleep, distributed sand across the tiles.

This was the beginning of my confusion. Because I am a reasonable person and I could not find the logic. The purpose of sweeping is to clean a dirty floor. The floor was not dirty. Therefore, sweeping was unnecessary. This is not a radical argument. This is basic cause and effect. I presented this case to my mother with the full confidence of a child who had just discovered logic and wanted to apply it immediately.

The Day I Figured Out It Was Never About The Floor

The real revelation came the day I asked why I was being asked to sweep when Emeka was right there at home. Emeka is my younger brother. Emeka, at that point, had two functioning hands, two functioning legs, and full knowledge of where the broom was kept. I had watched him walk past that broom every single morning without a single consequence. No voice. No reminder. No Emeka, a good man sweeps.

So I asked. Genuinely, sincerely; why is it me and not Emeka?

My mother looked at me the way she looks at questions she has decided not to dignify with a full answer and said simply: Emeka is a boy. And that was it. No further explanation offered. As if those three words were a complete argument that closed the matter permanently. Emeka is a boy and therefore the broom does not apply to him. I am a girl and therefore it does. Case closed, next topic, put some effort into those corners.

I was fifteen, maybe sixteen. I stood there holding that broom and something shifted. Because I realised, slowly and then all at once, that the sweeping was never really about the floor. The floor was just the venue. What was actually happening every morning was that I was being reminded of something. Trained in something. The sweeping was a lesson, and the lesson was: you are a girl, and this is what girls do, and the reason you must learn to do it without complaint is because one day a man will need you to do it for him, and if you cannot, he will not want you.

The broom was a rehearsal. The audience was a husband I hadn't met yet.

My Aunt, My Uncle, and The Question I Shouldn't Have Asked

I was thirteen when my uncle started beating my aunt.

I say it that plainly because that is what it was. He beat her. Regularly. Loudly enough that it was not a secret, quietly enough that nobody talked about it directly. It was one of those family things that exists in full view and still somehow goes unaddressed, the adults around me communicating in that particular silence that means: we know, we are not discussing this, move on. I was thirteen and not yet fluent in that silence. So I went to my mother.

I asked her, genuinely and without any idea how the question was going to land, whether she thought Uncle beat Aunty Ngozi because Aunty Ngozi was not keeping the house well enough. Whether maybe if she swept more, cooked better, did the things a good woman was supposed to do, he would stop.

I was thirteen. I had been taught that domestic performance was the price of a man's love. I had simply followed that logic to its conclusion.

My mother hushed me so fast I felt the air move. Don't say that. That is not something you say. Subject closed, move on, we do not discuss this.

Here is the thing about being hushed instead of answered: the question doesn't go away. It just goes underground. It sits there beneath everything, doing quiet damage. If she had said: Ada, nothing your aunt did or didn't do caused this, a man who hits his wife is the problem and only the problem, maybe I would have started unlearning earlier. Maybe I would have spent less time in my twenties believing that if I just did enough, it was enough, performed enough, I would be safe from being left or hurt or found lacking.

Instead, I was hushed, and I filed it away, and I kept sweeping.

Here is what I know now that I wish someone had told me at seven, standing in a house with two toddlers destroying everything in their path:

Domestic competence is a skill. A useful one. There is nothing wrong with knowing how to keep a clean home, cook a good meal, and maintain a space that feels like somewhere people want to be. These are genuinely valuable things. But they are not your worth. They are not the price of love. They are not what makes you deserving of care or a relationship that doesn't hurt you.

Sweep, mop, cook, scrub; arrange your entire life around being the perfect domestic partner, and a man who wants to leave will still leave. A man who wants to cheat will still cheat. Your jollof rice will not save you. Your clean floor will not protect you. Your perfectly made bed will not make someone love you the way you deserve to be loved.

That is the thing the broom was never going to teach me.

I did not decide to unlearn. It happened because something broke and the thing that broke was me, standing in a man's parents' kitchen in Enugu, making ofe onugbu from scratch for a man who had been cheating on me for eight months.

His name does not matter. What matters is that I was with him for three years and I was, by every standard my mother gave me, an outstanding girlfriend. I swept. I cooked. I showed up. I kept his space clean, anticipated his needs before he named them, and maintained the performance of a woman who had been in training for this her whole life. I was everything I had been raised to be. I was so good at it that I genuinely believed it was working.

The first time I found out he was cheating, I did not leave. I want to be honest about that. I found out and my first thought; not my second thought was: what did I not do enough?

That is what the broom taught me. That if something goes wrong, the answer is always more. More effort, more service, more proof that I am worth keeping. So instead of leaving, I graduated. I started washing his clothes regularly and deliberately, as an offering. I started making the trip to his parents' house in Enugu every month to cook. I would buy the ingredients in Owerri, travel with them, spend the weekend cooking for his family, and travel back, satisfied that I had now done enough. That this time, surely, I had proven it.

His mother loved me. She would hold my hands in the kitchen and tell me I was a good woman. That her son was lucky. That any man would be happy to have me.

Her son cheated again. Not once. Again and again, with a consistency that should have told me something but that I kept interpreting as a personal failure. Each time, I went back to the same question: what am I not doing? What is missing? What is the thing that, if I did it, would finally make me enough? I cleaned more. I cooked more. I showed up more. I made myself smaller and more useful and more available, and he kept cheating, and I kept responding by doing more chores as if the problem was always, somehow, the floor.

I was in his mother's kitchen the last time. Stirring that pot, sweating, having woken up early to start cooking so everything would be ready before the family arrived for lunch and something in me went very quiet. The kind of quiet that comes when a truth you have been avoiding finally gets tired of waiting.

I had swept. I had cooked. I had washed and traveled and performed and proven. I had done everything my mother's voice had ever asked of me. I had turned myself inside out trying to be good enough to keep and he was still, at that exact moment, cheating on me. I did not know it yet with certainty; I found out two weeks later but something in me already knew. Something in me had known for a while and I had responded by making more soup.

I finished cooking. I served the food. I smiled at his mother when she said I was a good woman. I traveled back to Owerri the next day, I sat in my clean apartment, and I asked myself for the first time a real question.

Not in an angry way. In a genuinely bewildered way. I had followed every instruction I had ever been given. I had been the woman my mother raised me to be, completely and without cutting corners, and it had not worked. It had not kept him faithful. It had not made me worthy of being chosen. It had not protected me from the exact thing I had been preparing against my whole life.

The chores were never the point. They were never going to be the point. A man who wants to cheat will cheat in a clean house with a full pot on the cooker and a woman who just came back from cooking for his mother. The floor has nothing to do with it. My mother's voice had been wrong, not because she was wrong to teach me, but because she had been taught wrong too. We had all been handed the same false equation: good woman plus domestic excellence equals love that stays and nobody had ever stopped to check the math.

That was the crack. That was where the unlearning began with a question I finally let myself ask. I didn't have the answer yet. Some mornings I still don't. But I put down that particular broom the day I realized I had been using it to earn something that was never supposed to be earned in the first place.

My parlour is clean. Not because I swept this morning, I didn't, it wasn't dirty but because I sweep it when it needs to be swept. My mother's voice is still there every morning, right on time, faithful as ever. I have just stopped letting it be the deciding vote.
