“What’s wrong?” “Nothing.” “Are you sure?” “Yes.” “Okay.”

Three hours later, he is still quiet. You have checked his face approximately 17 times, replayed the last conversation in your head, wondered if something happened at work, wondered if you did something, and are now fighting the urge to ask again because the last time you asked, he said you were doing too much.

Welcome to dating a man who thinks “I’m fine” is a complete emotional report.

The annoying thing is, he may actually be a good man. He shows up. He is loyal. He remembers things. He will drive across Lagos to come and get you if your car breaks down. He’ll send money when you’re short. He’ll sit beside you when you’re sick. He loves you.

He just won’t tell you what is going on inside his head and somehow, you have become the unpaid detective responsible for finding out.

You learn to read the silence. You know what his “nothing” sounds like when it actually means something. You can tell from the way he drops his keys whether work was terrible. You know when to leave him alone and when to sit beside him. You know when he’s angry, stressed, disappointed or worried, sometimes before he does and you’re tired.

Not because he’s a terrible boyfriend. That’s almost what makes it worse. If he were terrible, you’d have something obvious to point at. Instead, you’re sitting across from a man who loves you in almost every practical language and wondering why you still feel like there’s a locked room inside him that you’re not allowed to enter.

“I’m not asking him to cry,”&nbsp;Dami told us. “I’m asking him to talk to me. Those are not the same thing.”

“I’m Fine” Is Doing Too Much Work In This Relationship

Laila has been with her boyfriend for two years. She describes him as attentive, consistent and, in her words, “completely impossible to read.”

“He will be in a terrible mood for three days and I will spend those three days trying to figure out what happened, what I did, whether I should ask or give him space, whether giving him space is making it worse,” she says. “And then on the fourth day, he will just be fine again. Normal. Like nothing happened.”

The problem isn't even that he gets stressed or has bad days. Obviously, everybody does. The problem is that she is somehow expected to live inside the mystery with him.

“And if I bring it up, he’ll say he was just stressed and it’s sorted now. Sorted. Without telling me what it was. Without letting me in at all.”

This is the part nobody puts in those relationship posts about communication. Nobody is screaming. Nobody has cheated. Nobody is throwing things. There is no dramatic breakup happening in the rain.

It is just one person repeatedly saying, “Are you okay?” and another person repeatedly saying, “I'm fine,” until the first person starts wondering if she is unreasonable for wanting anything more.

“I’m not asking him to cry,” she says. “I’m asking him to talk to me. Those are not the same thing. But somehow they feel like the same thing to him.”

And that is exactly where the frustration lives.

Loving Him Has Turned You Into An Emotional Detective

Ask women who have been in this kind of relationship long enough and they will describe some version of the same routine.

You monitor. You observe. You calculate. You become an expert in facial expressions you never asked to study. Ify, 27, has a name for it.

“I call it emotional detective work. I am constantly gathering evidence. The way he responded to a text. Whether he laughed at dinner or just smiled. How long it took him to reply. I am doing all of this analysis just to figure out how he is feeling because he will not just tell me.”

She laughs when she says it, but there is nothing particularly funny about it.

“It’s exhausting. I am tired. I love him and I am tired.”

That sentence should probably be printed on a T-shirt. Emotional detective work is a full-time job nobody applied for. You shouldn't have to study your partner's breathing patterns to know whether something is wrong. You shouldn't need to conduct an investigation because your boyfriend had a bad day and you definitely shouldn't have to guess whether you're allowed to ask the person you're dating how they feel.

“I have apologised for asking how he is feeling,” she says. “Think about that. I said sorry for wanting to know if my boyfriend was okay. And I meant it because the alternative was another three days of silence. That’s where we are.”

She Tells Him Everything. He Tells Her Nothing.

This one hurts differently because at least when someone genuinely doesn't know how to communicate, you can tell yourself there is something to work with.

Maybe he needs time. Maybe he was never taught. Maybe eventually, when he feels safe enough, he'll open up but what happens when you've actually had the conversation and he tells you he simply doesn't want to?

“I tell him everything,” Clare, 23, says. “What I’m worried about, what happened at work, what I’m feeling, what I need. Everything.”

She asks him the same questions. He doesn't like them.

“One day I just asked him directly, ‘Why won’t you talk to me?’ And he said, very calmly, that he’s just not comfortable sharing those things.”

Just like that. Not “I’m working on it.”&nbsp;Not “Give me time.” Just: I’m not comfortable sharing.

“Do you know what it does to you when the person you love looks you in the eye and tells you they are not comfortable letting you in? After everything you have given them? After all the times you showed up?”

“It doesn’t feel like a personality trait. It feels like a choice. And the choice feels like it is about you.”

It isn't necessarily about her but try explaining that to yourself at 1 a.m. while the person beside you is sleeping peacefully and you're lying there wondering why you are apparently easy to talk to for everyone except the person you love.

“I stopped sharing as much after that,” she says. “Not to punish him. Just because it started to feel unfair. Like I was pouring into something that was never going to pour back.”

He Shows Up For Everything Except The Conversation

This is what makes these relationships so difficult to explain. The man isn't necessarily a bad partner. He remembers her birthday. He checks that she got home safely. He sends food when she's working late. He will cross Lagos at rush hour because she needs him. He knows how she takes her coffee. He is loyal. He is present. He loves her. He just does not know how to sit across from her and say, “This is what I'm feeling.”

Raliat, 25, has spent months trying to explain this to her friends.

“Everyone says, ‘Just be grateful he’s a good man.’ And he is. I know he is.”

Then comes the part she wishes people would understand.

“But I feel alone in this relationship in a way I cannot explain to people who haven't felt it.”

She can be sitting beside him and still feel alone. They can have a perfectly good day and she can still feel alone because she knows that if something is wrong with him, she probably won't know until he has already processed it, dealt with it and moved on. She was never invited into any of it.

“I don’t want to be his therapist,” she says. “I want to be his girlfriend. I want him to talk to me the way he talks to his friends when they’re going through something. Just normally. Just like I’m a person he trusts.”

And honestly, that distinction matters. She isn't asking for a man who turns every Tuesday evening into a three-hour emotional debrief. She wants access. She wants to know the person she's building a life with.

Most men didn't wake up one morning and decide, “You know what? I think I’ll make emotional intimacy extremely difficult for the woman I love.”Many of them were taught. They grew up watching fathers who didn't talk about their feelings. They were told to stop crying. They were praised for being strong and mocked for being sensitive. They learnt very early that problems are things you solve quietly and emotions are things you manage privately.

So now they're adults with girlfriends asking, “What’s wrong?”

And their entire emotional vocabulary is:

“Nothing.” “I’m good.” “Don’t worry about it.” “It’s handled.” “Forget it.” “I'm fine.”

Unfortunately, “I'm fine” cannot carry the emotional workload of an entire relationship. A relationship therapist,&nbsp; says this pattern is often rooted in how many Nigerian boys are socialised.

“What we are dealing with in a lot of Nigerian relationships is a generational pattern of emotional suppression in men that has never been interrupted,” she explains. “These men were not taught to identify their emotions, let alone express them.”

She says vulnerability is often presented to boys as weakness while silence is presented as strength.

“So they arrive in relationships as adults with no language for what they feel and no framework for sharing it, not because they don't feel things, but because feeling things was never supposed to be visible.”

Which explains a lot. It does not, however, automatically solve the problem.&nbsp;Because understanding why someone struggles to communicate doesn't mean their partner has to be comfortable being emotionally locked out forever.

Understanding Him Doesn't Mean You Have To Keep Suffering

This is where these conversations usually get complicated because, yes, maybe his father never told him he loved him. Maybe his childhood taught him to hide his emotions. Maybe vulnerability genuinely scares him. Maybe he doesn't know how to put what he's feeling into words. You can understand all of that and still say:

Compassion isn't a contract to tolerate emotional neglect indefinitely.&nbsp;You can have empathy for where someone's behaviour comes from while still being honest about what that behaviour is doing to you.

Clinical psychologists explain that many men also grow up with a cultural idea that emotional openness somehow reduces their authority.

“Many men genuinely believe, consciously or not, that if they show their partner what they are struggling with, they lose something; respect, control, the upper hand,” she says.&nbsp;“Vulnerability has been framed as exposure rather than connection.”

Until that changes, she says, even a loving relationship can struggle to develop emotional intimacy because love cannot do all the talking for you.&nbsp;At some point, the person you're sharing your life with needs to know what is actually happening inside you.

What She Actually Means When She Says, “Talk To Me”

There seems to be some confusion here. She is not asking you to suddenly become a completely different man. She isn't demanding tears. She isn't asking for a five-page essay about your childhood trauma every Sunday evening. She doesn't need you to turn into the most emotionally expressive man in Lagos by next Tuesday. She wants you to start somewhere.

“I want to know what scares you,” Gloria, 31, says. “Not in a deep philosophical way. Just, what are you worried about right now? What happened today that bothered you? What did your boss say that you've been sitting with? What are you thinking about at 11 p.m. when you go quiet?”

“Just tell me. That's it. Just tell me something real.”

Something real. That's the whole ask. Tell her you're worried about money. Tell her work is getting to you. Tell her you're angry and you don't know why yet. Tell her you need an hour alone and you'll come back. Tell her you're scared. Tell her you don't know. You don't need to have the perfect explanation. You just need to stop making her guess.

There is a limit to how long someone can keep knocking on a door before they eventually stop. That is the part nobody talks about. At first, she asks. Then she learns how to ask better. Then she gives you space. Then she tries again. Then she stops asking because she doesn't want to feel needy. Then she stops sharing because it feels one-sided. Then she starts processing things with her friends instead, and eventually, something changes.

Not necessarily because she stopped loving you.&nbsp;Sometimes she just stopped expecting access. That is how emotional distance happens. Not with one huge fight.

Sometimes it happens quietly, while two people are still together. She is still there. She still loves you. She still sends the “have you eaten?” text. She still knows your favourite food. She still lies beside you at night, but she has stopped knocking, and if you only notice when she finally walks away, you may have missed the part where she spent months asking you to open the door.

She is not asking for a perfect man. She is asking for a partner, and sometimes “I'm fine” is not enough. Sometimes she needs to know what is actually going on.

Not because she wants to fix you.&nbsp;Not because she wants to interrogate you. Not because she wants you to become someone else, because she loves you and she would like to know the person she loves.
