If there’s one thing Gen Z has become known for, it’s asking questions. They call us the “Soro Soke” generation because we are far less willing to do something just because “that’s how it’s always been done". Instead, we ask a lot of questions and don’t hesitate to speak up when we don’t agree with traditions that have almost become law.

That doesn’t mean every tradition is bad or should be discarded. Many of them have helped shape our values and communities. But as society evolves, so do our priorities. We’re no longer neck-deep in customs that once seemed non-negotiable. Our curiosity has exposed just how negotiable they truly are, so we don’t beat ourselves up just to meet up.

Here are seven Nigerian traditions young people are rapidly letting go of for the better.

For many Nigerian families, weddings have traditionally been grand, community-centred celebrations involving large guest lists, multiple ceremonies, and significant financial investment. Over time, wedding ceremonies became less about the couple and more about the families and communities involved. But today, a greater emphasis on financial stability and changing priorities is leading some young people to choose smaller, more intimate wedding <a href="https://aura.ng/culture/how-to-plan-a-luxurious-wedding-on-a-budget-in-2026">ceremonies</a>.

Traditional expectations often assigned men the role of primary breadwinner and women the responsibility of housekeeping. While these roles remain important in many families, more young couples are embracing flexible arrangements shaped by mutual respect for each person’s career and the belief that both partners have equal roles to play in the family. So, responsibilities now reflect individual circumstances at varying times rather than gender alone.

Respect for elders remains a core Nigerian value, but many young people are increasingly separating respect from hierarchy. Rather than believing age alone should determine whose voice carries the most weight in a room, they are placing greater emphasis on mutual respect. Older generations can no longer get away with bullying younger people into respecting them simply because they are older. Rather, we are encouraging healthy dialogue across generations… irrespective of age.

4. The Pressure to Marry by a Certain Age

Marriage continues to be a major cultural milestone, but many young Nigerians are delaying it in pursuit of personal growth and all-round development. They have goals set in stone that they are not willing to compromise for any tradition. As a result, traditional timelines around marriage are becoming more flexible, especially for young Nigerian women. And honestly, it is so beautiful to behold!

5. The Expectation to Attend Every Family Event

From weddings and naming ceremonies to funerals and extended family meetings, attendance has long been seen as a sign of loyalty. Over time, it became a ritual that proved how much respect you had for your family members. However, a growing appreciation for personal time and individual schedules is leading many young people to be more selective about the events they attend. So, there’s no more pressure to please family members at our own detriment.

6. Parents Choosing Their Children’s Career Paths

For decades, many Nigerian parents only encouraged mainstream <a href="https://aura.ng/the-streets/so-you-have-a-degree-and-zero-job-offers-welcome-to-nigeria">careers</a> like medicine, law, engineering, or banking because they were seen as stable and prestigious. But today, more young people are assertive enough to pursue careers solely based on their interests and evolving labour market trends. They are no longer afraid to stand up to their parents because they are convinced they can succeed wherever they find themselves…as long as they put their minds to it.

7. The Idea That Moving Out Before Marriage Is Rebellious

In many Nigerian households, <a href="https://aura.ng/the-streets/the-nigerian-marriage-checklist-nobody-talks-about-but-everyone-uses">unmarried adults</a>—again, particularly women—were traditionally expected to remain in the family home until marriage. Increasingly, however, young people are moving out earlier for work, education, and independence. And instead of viewing this as an act of rebellion, many now see it as a practical step towards adulthood and self-reliance because it is actually paying off.
