The asoebi had already been picked up from the tailor when Chiamaka called her mother to say there wasn't going to be a wedding. Not postponed. Not “we're taking some time.” Not “we'll announce a new date.” There was simply not going to be a wedding. That is the thing nobody really tells you about calling off a wedding: ending the relationship is only the beginning.

By the time you have a wedding date, there are already too many people involved. Your parents have told their friends. Your friends have bought clothes. Somebody's aunty has probably already started planning what she'll wear. Vendors have your money. The church knows. Your colleagues know, and there is almost certainly one person who has already posted your pre-wedding pictures with “my favourite couple” and seventeen heart emojis.

So what happens when you suddenly have to tell everyone that there is no wedding?

We asked ten people who called off their weddings what happened after everyone had already been told.

“The Photographer Told Me He Knew Something Was Wrong From Our Pre-Wedding Shoot”

Bisola, 29, had already paid her photographer for both the pre-wedding shoot and the wedding coverage when she called off her wedding.

“I actually forgot that I had paid the balance for the wedding coverage. I was so focused on everything happening with the relationship that vendors were the last thing on my mind.”

She eventually called him. “I was expecting him to say the money was gone. You know how these things are. Once you've paid, everybody suddenly has a policy.”

Instead, he refunded her. “Full refund. No argument. He just said he understood and that he was sorry.”

Then he said something that Bisola still remembers. “He told me he had noticed something during the pre-wedding shoot. He said we didn't look happy.”

“Not that the pictures were bad. The pictures were actually beautiful. But he said when he was taking some of the candid shots, he noticed that we weren't really relaxed around each other.” The photographer had apparently kept that observation to himself.

“He said, ‘I just didn't want to talk because it wasn't my business.’” Bisola says hearing that was strange. “Because this man had met us for, what, five hours? And he had noticed something that people who had known us for years didn't notice.”

“I Forgot To Tell The Food Vendor. The Man Called Me On The Morning Of The Wedding.”

This one is Chiamaka, 28, and honestly, she still doesn't know whether to laugh or cry when she tells it.

“The wedding had been cancelled and I was dealing with so many things. Family. My ex. The church. Vendors. I was just scattered.”

There was one person she completely forgot to inform. “My food vendor.”

She had already paid for 200 portions of food. “I didn't remember until the morning I was supposed to get married.”

The caterer called. “He was like, ‘Madam, where should we deliver?’ And I just went quiet.”

Chiamaka eventually had to tell him. “I said, ‘There is no wedding again.’”

There was a long silence. “I think he thought I was joking.”

She wasn't. “The food had already been cooked. Everything was packed. The man was literally ready to start moving.”

What happened next was very Nigerian. “He told me, ‘Madam, I cannot eat 200 portions of jollof by myself.’”

She laughs. “He was actually angry. Not even because of the money. He was angry because I didn't tell him.”

The vendor eventually found a way to salvage some of the food. “He posted some of it online. I think he was trying to sell it. Then people who were supposed to attend my wedding started liking the post.”

She still remembers seeing one particular name. “My aunty liked it. My own aunty. I just muted the post.”

“My Colleague Asked If We Could Turn The Cancelled Wedding Into My Birthday Party”

Kelechi, 31, had already told everyone at work that she was getting married.

“My colleagues had contributed money. They bought asoebi. They gave me a gift. Everybody signed a card.”

Then she had to tell them there was no wedding. “I was so embarrassed. I didn't even know how to say it. I just called the woman who was closest to me at work and told her first.”

The office was supportive. “But one person asked me something that made me laugh so hard because what else could I do?”

They had already paid for a small space for her office send-off. “She asked me if we could just turn it into my birthday party since the money had already been paid.”

Kelechi laughs. “I said, ‘Please, I beg you. Leave me.’”

She says the suggestion was actually helpful. “It was funny, and I needed that. Everybody was treating me like I had lost somebody. I had lost a relationship, yes, but I was still alive. I needed somebody to make me laugh.”

“My Tailor Still Had My Aso-Oke Six Months Later”

Tomiwa, 32, thought the aso-oke was one of the things she had successfully left behind. Apparently not.

“I had bought the fabric with my ex. Everything was already sewn halfway. After we called off the wedding, I told my tailor to just keep it. I didn't even want to see it.”

Six months later, the tailor called. “She asked me what I wanted her to do with the remaining fabric.”

Tomiwa wasn't expecting what came next. “She casually told me she was making my ex's new fiancée's wedding dress.”

There was a pause. “And she said it was from the same fabric run.”

Tomiwa says she didn't know what to say. “I just said, ‘Oh.’”

The tailor continued talking like nothing had happened. “She was telling me the new bride was coming for fitting and everything. Meanwhile, I'm sitting there thinking, this woman is telling me about the wedding of the man I was supposed to marry.”

Did she take the fabric back? “No. I told her to keep it.”

She laughs now. “I didn't want to own anything that was going to make me feel like a character in somebody else's sequel.”

“My Mother And The Hall Owner Had A Fight I Still Can't Forget”

Femi, 33, had paid ₦850,000 for his wedding venue. When the wedding was cancelled, his mother tried to get some of the money back.

“My mother was very angry. She felt like, okay, the wedding is not happening, but surely there should be some conversation about the money.”

The conversation did not go well. “She called the hall people and they basically said the money was gone.”

His mother wasn't having it. “My mum started arguing with them. I wasn't even there initially. She went herself because she said she was not going to sit down and watch ₦850,000 disappear.”

Then the hall owner said something that changed the entire conversation. “I don't even know exactly what he said because I wasn't there, but according to my mum, he said something really cruel about our family and my mother raising a son who couldn't even keep his wedding together.”

His mother was devastated. “She said she was so embarrassed. She told me, ‘I went there to collect our money and this man insulted our family because the wedding didn't happen.’”

She came home furious. “But after that, she just told me to leave the money. She said, ‘Let them eat it. I don't want to hear from these people again.’” “But honestly, by then, my mum was more concerned about the humiliation than the money.”

“I Went To The Landlord Myself Because Everybody Was Suddenly ‘Sorting It Out’”

Ngozi, 27, and her fiancé had already rented an apartment for their marriage.

“We had paid everything. Rent, agent fee, all of it. It was money we'd both saved for over a year.”

When the wedding was cancelled, they needed to get their money back. “That was when I realised that breaking up is one thing. Untangling your life from somebody is another thing entirely.”

Her ex kept saying they were working on the refund. “Every week it was, ‘I am sorting it out.’ I'm like, okay, sort it out.”

Eventually, she got tired. “I went to the landlord myself.”

She explained what had happened and told him she wanted her portion of the money. “I didn't threaten anybody. I just told him, ‘Sir, I will keep coming here until this money is returned.’”

It worked. “Two days later, he gave me my money.”

Her takeaway? “Sometimes you just have to stop waiting for everybody to handle things nicely. Go and handle your own business.”

“The Church Called A Meeting To Save A Wedding We Had Already Decided Not To Have”

Dayo, 30, had already gone through several church wedding preparations when the relationship ended.

“The church actually called us for a meeting.” “A proper meeting. Me, him, two pastors and the pastor's wife.”

They wanted to know what had happened. “I understood. They were trying to help.”

But things became tense. “We started explaining what was happening and then we started arguing with each other.”

At some point, Dayo realised how strange the whole situation was. “I was sitting there thinking, these people are trying to settle us so we can get married, but we are literally sitting here arguing in front of them.”

The meeting didn't change their minds. “The wedding had already become bigger than the relationship. Everybody was trying to save the wedding because so much had already been invested in it.”

Eventually, they had to accept that none of that mattered. “We were the ones getting married. Not the church. Not our parents. Not our friends.”

“His Mother Called Me Crying And I Ended Up Comforting Her”

Aisha, 26, says telling her former fiancé's mother was one of the hardest parts.

Aisha expected anger. “She was crying.”

Not just crying. “She was really crying. She was telling me she had already told all her sisters. She had bought her aso-oke. She had been praying for the marriage. She had already imagined everything.”

Aisha says she didn't know what to say. “I was also crying, but I was listening to her talk and thinking, this is my wedding too. I'm also losing something.”

Then the conversation took a strange turn. “I ended up comforting her.”

She laughs sadly. “I was saying, ‘Mummy, please don't worry. Everything will be okay.’ And I'm thinking, this is my cancelled wedding. Why am I the one comforting you?”

She says she eventually understood that the cancellation affected more people than she expected. “Everybody had built something around that wedding. His mother had built a future in her head. My mother had. Our friends had. But at the end of the day, we still had to decide whether the marriage itself was right.”

“Two Years Later, I Found Out His Family Still Thought I Took Their Money”

Dumebi, 34, thought the story was over. Then, two years later, a cousin sent her a screenshot. “It was a family conversation. My name came up.” Apparently, his family had a completely different version of why the wedding ended.

“They were saying I had run away with money.” She was shocked.

“There was no money.&nbsp;There had been a few household items and some fabric bought during the wedding preparations. That was literally it.”

But according to the family, the story had become something else. “I was apparently this woman who had collected money and abandoned their son.”

She didn't confront them. “I just looked at it and laughed because what else was I going to do? I had already moved on.”

Still, it bothered her. “Not because I wanted him back. I didn't. It was just strange to know that people could have a completely different version of your life in their heads.”

“At Least You Found Out Before Marriage” Started To Annoy Me

Emeka, 34, heard the same sentence over and over again.

“At least you found out before marriage.”

He knows people meant well. “Initially, I appreciated it. I knew they were trying to comfort me.”

But after hearing it from almost everybody, it started to feel different. “After a while, I was just tired. Because yes, I knew I made the right decision. But I was still sad.”

He had lost a relationship. “I had planned my life around this person. We had talked about where we would live, children, everything. So when people say, ‘At least you found out before marriage,’ you're grateful, but you're also thinking, can I just be sad first?”

That was the part people didn't understand. “Calling off a wedding doesn't mean you're happy. Sometimes you're just choosing not to make a mistake bigger.”

So, What Happens When The Wedding Doesn't Happen?

Apparently, everything still has to happen.&nbsp;The vendors have to be called. The aso-oke has to go somewhere.&nbsp;The food has to be dealt with.&nbsp;The hall may or may not refund your money. Your parents have to make phone calls.&nbsp;Your colleagues need an explanation.

The church wants to understand.&nbsp;His mother may call you crying.&nbsp;Someone somewhere will probably still ask when the wedding is and eventually, you have to learn how to answer but beneath all the chaos, there is something these stories have in common.

Everyone had already invested something into the wedding, money, time, emotions, expectations, prayers, fabric, food, deposits, announcements, family pride. None of that was enough to make the marriage worth keeping and maybe that's the hardest thing about calling off a wedding.
