Getting a tattoo is easy. Getting a tattoo and returning to a Nigerian home without your mother seeing it is where the real work begins. 

You are an adult. You paid for it yourself. You chose the design. You even sat through the pain voluntarily, but somehow, the moment you step through your parents' front door, you are 16 again and your mother has every right to ask why there is ink on your body, and if your father is the type to say, “What is this nonsense?” before you have even finished saying good evening, God bless you.

The good news is that thousands of Nigerians have survived this before you. Some hid their tattoos for months. Some strategically placed them where nobody would find them. Some invented stories so ridiculous that I'm honestly surprised they worked.

So if you are thinking of getting a tattoo while living with Nigerian parents, here is the survival manual nobody gave you.

First Things First: Know What You're Walking Into

Not all Nigerian parents are the same and your entire strategy depends on which type you have.

The Pentecostal Parent will not just be upset. They will be concerned. For your soul specifically. There will be prayers. There will be anointing oil applied directly to the tattoo. There will be a phone call to the pastor that you will not find out about until your aunt mentions it three months later at someone's birthday. This parent is not reacting to ink. They are reacting to what the ink represents in a spiritual framework you did not consult before booking the appointment. Manage accordingly.

The "What Will People Say" Parent is not worried about your soul. They are worried about their reputation. Every single objection will eventually connect back to perception. What will your uncle think. What will happen when you want to get married. What will your future in-laws say. To this parent, you have not just gotten a tattoo. You have created a PR crisis, and they are the ones who have to manage it.

The Tired Parent has seen enough of life that your tattoo is genuinely not their biggest problem right now. They will not be happy. They will make that specific Nigerian parent sound, you know the one, and then they will move on because they have other things to worry about. You are going to be fine.

The Actually Cool Parent exists somewhere in Nigeria. We have not personally met one but we have been told they are real. If this is you, close this guide. You don't need it.

Pick Your Location Like Your Life Depends On It

Because in a Nigerian home, it kind of does. The tattoo that looks incredible on your forearm will also be the first thing your mother sees when she hands you a plate of food. Think about that before you commit.

The safest locations are the ones that disappear under normal clothing. Not suspicious clothing. Normal clothing. The moment you start wearing long sleeves in 35 degree Lagos heat your mother will know something is happening and she will find it before you are ready.

Upper arm, back, ribcage — manageable. Concealable. Yours until you decide otherwise.

Forearm — risky but survivable with planning.

Neck, hand, face — we cannot help you. You have chosen visibility over survival and that is a decision only you can make. We respect it. We are also not coming to that family meeting.

The First Few Days Are The Most Dangerous

Fresh tattoos need care and care requires behaviour changes and behaviour changes get noticed in a Nigerian home where your mother tracks everything including how many biscuits are left in the kitchen. You cannot let people touch it. You cannot keep scratching it absentmindedly. You cannot let your little sibling slap you there and then react dramatically.

And please, do not get a tattoo on a Monday and come home on Monday evening behaving like someone who has just committed a federal crime. If you normally wear sleeveless tops around the house and you suddenly arrive in a hoodie zipped to your neck in August, you have already failed. Your mother is already suspicious. The tattoo is already discovered in every way that matters.

We are very serious about this one. Your siblings will not keep this secret. It does not matter how close you are or how many times they have come through before. One of them will mention it accidentally. One of them will use it as leverage during an unrelated argument. One of them will bring it up at dinner genuinely thinking it has already been discussed.

It will not have already been discussed. Tell nobody in the house until you are ready to tell everybody in the house.

You have successfully hidden your tattoo for two months. Everything is going well, and then your friend comes to the house and says loudly, "Oya let me see the tattoo now!"

Your mother is right there. Your auntie who came to visit is also right there. Your grandmother is eating. If you are hiding a tattoo, the tattoo is classified information. Your friends need to understand this. No Instagram stories. No tagging you in pictures where it is visible. No Snapchats, and please remind yourself to check every photo before you send it to the family WhatsApp group because you will forget at least once and that is how it ends.

At some point someone will ask. They always ask. Maybe it's your younger sibling. Maybe it's the auntie who has suddenly developed an interest in your skin. Maybe it's your mother looking at you with an expression you have seen before and it has never meant anything good.

When they ask "what is that" you cannot start thinking about your answer at that exact moment. Prepare.

You can say it is a temporary tattoo. You can say it is a reaction to something. You can say you are treating something. You can simply say it is a tattoo and accept whatever comes next.

What you cannot do is provide a 15 minute unsolicited explanation that raises more questions than it answers. The more details you give without being asked the more suspicious you become. Say the minimum. Let them ask follow up questions if they want them.

First: don't panic.
Second: don't laugh.
Third: do not say "it's my body."

I know. I know. It IS your body. You ARE an adult. You DID pay for it yourself. All of that is true, but if you are standing in your mother's kitchen while she stares at your tattoo like she has just discovered evidence of something unspeakable, "it's my body" is not going to move this conversation anywhere useful. Save the philosophy. This is not the moment.

What actually helps: Stay calm. Your calm is your most powerful tool. The conversation goes where the energy goes and if you stay steady there is a real chance it stays manageable.

Don't apologise for the tattoo if you don't mean it. She will know and it will make things worse. What you can genuinely apologise for is not telling her sooner. That is real. Lead with that.

Then let her react. She may be upset. She may ask who influenced you. She may ask if you have joined something. She may bring up everything she has done for you since birth. Let her. You don't have to match the energy. You don't have to defend yourself at full volume. Just stay in the room and let her say what she needs to say.

The Truth About Nigerian Parents And Tattoos

Your parents may never like the tattoo. That is just the truth and it is worth sitting with before you get it.

The goal is not to make your mother start admiring your ink at family functions. The goal is to get through the initial reaction with your relationship intact and your dignity reasonably preserved.

Nigerian parents do not forget but they do adjust. The tattoo that caused three days of silence in January will be something your mother mentions with tired amusement by December. Your father who said he didn't want to see it will within a year have stopped seeing it entirely because it is just part of you now.

You are still their child. That part doesn't change. And that part, in the end, is stronger than the argument about the tattoo.

Good luck. Cover your arms at Christmas until you're ready, and whatever you do, don't get a second one before the first one has been fully processed. They are still counting.
