It is a huge act of rebellion to leave your parents' house as a young girl, without seeking their permission. In Nigeria especially, it goes against everything we are taught about family, loyalty, and respect. The expectation is that you stay, you manage, you endure, because that is what good daughters do. But what happens when the place that is supposed to be your safe haven is the very thing stealing your peace? What do you do when staying means slowly losing yourself? 

Sandra, 27, found herself at that exact crossroads. She sat down with Aura and told us everything.

Take us back to the beginning. What kind of home did you grow up in?

It was an average Nigerian family. We were not hungry, but we were not comfortable either. My parents did their best, genuinely. Fees were paid, they sent pocket money when they could, but stuff like clothes, shoes, and hair was completely on me. I remember that as early as secondary school, my mum will encourage us to save money we got from visitors and relatives so we could buy nice clothes for the school end-of-the-year party. From 16, I started finding my own money. Small jobs, ushering gigs, petty trading, anything. I've honestly never stopped since then. That's just how it is for a lot of Nigerian families, you're provided for in the ways that keep you alive, and everything else you figure out yourself.

You came back home after school. Looking back, do you think that was the right call?

Honestly? I ask myself that a lot. It was the normal thing to do, but I regretted it later. Also, it was a given because Lagos is where opportunities are, and we live in Lagos sooo.... I wanted to learn a skill, I wasn't ready to rush into NYSC, I just needed a moment to figure out what I was doing but nobody tells you that coming back home after school changes the dynamic completely. When you're a student, you have a purpose, there's a structure to why you're there. When you come back after finishing, you're just... there and people start looking at you differently without saying a word about it.

What did that look like in your house specifically?

Nobody sat me down. My parents didn't call a meeting to ask about my plans or how they could support me, that's just not how we operated. What happened instead was the house just became uncomfortable. They expected me to get a job like I always did; every holiday, every strike, every tiny opportunity, but this time, I had plans, I wanted to learn a skill but they couldn't understand so when they saw that I wasn't making plans to get a job, I was suddenly responsible for everything — cooking, sweeping, washing plates, the whole house. They didn't like me going out and my dad would call these family meetings&nbsp; which were really just him sitting me down to talk me down. Pick something apart. One week it was my room, next week something else in the house. There were good times too; I don't want to make it sound like it was a horror film every single day but the good times were just... quieter than the bad ones.

Okay but were you actually doing the chores or were you dodging them? Be honest.

See, I knew this question was coming. Yes! I was doing them. I swept, I cooked, I washed plates; the everyday things, I did them. What I wasn't doing as often were the bigger things — mopping the whole house, scrubbing the bathroom because I was so busy trying to learn my skill and get other opportunities. Mind you, I had brothers too, but that is a separate discussion entirely. After a few months, I got an internship, and everything just got worse.

I got an offer at a really big brand; the kind of name that opens doors, you know? The pay was bad, the commute was mad, five to six hours every day, both ways. My parents weren't so supportive because of the distance and the pay, but I took it anyway. I was thinking about my CV, about what I was building. What I didn't fully account for was how completely it would take over my life. Monday to Friday gone, weekends barely yours and my dad's complaints did not reduce at all. If anything, now he had new material. I'm not doing chores because I'm never home. I'm never home because I'm commuting five hours for a job he didn't want me to take in the first place. It was a lot.

How were you holding yourself together during all of this?

Church. Genuinely, church saved me during that period. My friends were there, I sang in the choir, it was the one place I could show up and just exist without anyone assessing me. That was my escape, the one thing that was fully mine. My dad couldn't understand it, he wanted me to stay home on weekends and do chores instead of going to church and I just couldn't give that up. Take away the job, take away my sleep, take away whatever but not that. That was the thing keeping me functional.

You've said your parents were proud of you but not completely. What does that mean?

They were proud of the headline. When I got a job immediately after NYSC, ehn, they were announcing it everywhere. Their friends, family members, everybody heard and I was happy for them but it was like the achievements existed in a separate room from the relationship. At home, nothing changed. The comments didn't stop, the criticism didn't slow down and the few times it actually got to me and I cried, they mocked me. Like crying was just another thing I was doing wrong. That one always got me.

Was there a moment that shifted something in you?

My mum was angry about something I did, and while venting her anger, she told me I looked unkempt. That I never used my money to buy decent clothes or good shoes. And the thing is, I had been quietly contributing to the house. Dropping money for food, helping where I could. I had nothing left for myself after all of that, genuinely nothing. I wasn't choosing to look that way. I was surviving and she was looking at me like it was a personality flaw. After that day something just shifted. I stopped dropping money without being asked. Stopped doing things expecting anyone to notice. I still helped but I started considering myself too.

What was the final thing that made you leave?

Hmm, it was Christmas morning. I'll never forget it. I had just come back from a church camp three days before. My dad called me to come and sit down, and he just started. Said I was lazy. Said I was dirty. Said I clearly didn't bathe properly. Said I had no home training. Called me an embarrassment. I was so shocked because Christmas Day was supposed to be a happy day, and he chose that day to verbally abuse me. I just sat there and took it, and then I went to my room and I cried so much.

Wait — where was this coming from? Had something specific triggered him?

My neck. I had been dealing with hyperpigmentation around my neck for about three months at that point and he used that. Said that's why my neck looked the way it did, because I was dirty, because I didn't bathe well. That was his explanation for what was happening to my skin.

Had he ever mentioned your neck before that morning?

Not once. In three months, not a single question. Not "Sandra what's that, are you okay, have you seen a doctor?" Nothing. No concern, no curiosity and I want people to understand what I was actually going through at that time, I had been going to hospitals alone trying to figure out what was wrong with me. The doctors were checking for insulin resistance, possibly PCOS. I was gaining weight in a way that felt different, I was very insecure about my body, scared about what was happening to me, getting test results alone, processing all of it alone. Nobody at home knew the full picture because I didn't feel like I could bring it to them and the first time my father acknowledges my neck, the most visible part of something I was quietly suffering through, it's to tell me I don't bathe well. On Christmas Day.

How did your mum respond when she found you?

She came and met me crying in my room and she asked me to go and run an errand.

No "are you okay." No acknowledgement of what just happened. Just an errand. I think that was the moment I truly accepted it, waiting for them to see me clearly wasn't a plan. It was just hope and hope without any evidence is just suffering with a nicer name.

I texted my friend that same Christmas Day. Got an agent. Found a place. I had savings but not nearly enough, so I took a loan to cover the rest and I want to be honest, I was scared. Really scared. It didn't make sense on paper, taking a loan not to invest, not to build anything, just to leave. Nobody around me fully understood the urgency but I was dying inside. I was dreading going home every single day, sometimes I'd sit outside the gate just to delay walking in. I was crying all the time. I couldn't be myself, I couldn't think straight, I couldn't breathe properly in that house anymore. So I took the risk. I paid the loan back over six months and I do not regret a single payment.

When did you tell your parents you were leaving?

The day before. I had already signed, already paid. When I told my dad he called me names; I honestly can't even remember exactly what he said because by that point I had made up my mind that nothing was going to stop me. I packed my things, and I left. January 31st.

Some people will hear this and say you should have been more patient. What do you tell them?

I've been working since I was 16. Every kind of job. Things that took my peace, things that paid nothing, things I did just to survive and still find ways to help my family. I am not lazy. I have never been lazy, but I couldn't be perfect for them, and I couldn't keep pretending I was fine when I was falling apart inside. And this idea that you should stay and endure, where does it end? I was losing myself in that house. You can love your parents completely and still know that you cannot heal in the place that keeps hurting you.

They didn't speak to me for months after I left. But I never stopped reaching out. I kept calling, kept visiting on some weekends even when it was uncomfortable and strange. Eventually they came around. Things are okay now, not perfect, not like we've had some big dramatic reconciliation. My dad has never apologised. I don't think he will, and I've made my peace with that. But we talk. We show up for each other in the ways that are available now. That's what it is.

It's small. I'm furnishing it little by little, one thing at a time. But it feels like a sanctuary, I genuinely mean that. I wake up when I want. I eat what I want. I come home at whatever time, and there's nobody at the door with a complaint or a look. Nobody managing my time or judging how I exist. I didn't realise how much energy I was spending every single day just bracing, preparing for whatever mood or comment was coming, until I stopped having to do it. That energy is mine now. Just mine. And honestly? That's everything.

Leaving your family home without permission will never be an easy decision for a young Nigerian woman. The guilt is real, the judgement is real, and the financial risk is very real. But so is the cost of staying somewhere that is quietly breaking you. Sandra paid that cost for longer than she should have and when she finally stopped, it wasn't dramatic or clean or perfectly timed. She just ran out of reasons to keep hurting.
