It is a Sunday afternoon. I am 29 years old. I have a Masters degree, seven years of work experience, and strong opinions about wine. I am sitting in my childhood bedroom, the one with the curtains my mother bought in 2009 that she has never once considered replacing because "they are still good", surrounded by the bags that contain everything I own, which I have just finished moving back from the apartment I could no longer afford, and my father is standing in the doorway looking at me with the expression of a man who has been waiting seven years for this exact moment.

He did not say anything immediately. He looked at the boxes. He looked at me. He looked at the curtains, possibly for reassurance and then he said, slowly, with the weight of a man savouring something he has been holding in his mouth for a very long time:

"I told you Lagos was not going to be easy."

I had no response because I was sitting on the floor of my childhood bedroom at 29 with my life in bags and I did not have the remaining dignity required to deploy any of them.

He nodded. He left. I sat there for a long time.

This is the story of the eleven months that followed. I am going to tell you everything.

I had a plan. Please understand this before you form any opinions about my character. I was not reckless. I was not irresponsible. I had a good job at a company I had worked hard to get into, an apartment I was genuinely proud of, a life that looked, from the outside and honestly from the inside too, like someone who had figured things out.

Then the company restructured. Which is a corporate word for: you are competent, you have done nothing wrong, and none of that matters because people above your pay grade have made decisions that have eliminated your position and your income and your entire sense of what the next five years of your life look like. They gave me a letter. They said they were sorry. They were not sorry. Nobody is sorry in a restructuring. They are just done with you.

I thought I had savings. I did have savings. Lagos, however, does not slow down because your income has and my savings turned out to be approximately four months of savings when I needed them to be approximately eight. By month five I was doing the mathematics at 2AM on a Tuesday, rent, food, electricity, transport, the small loan I had taken and not fully paid back and understanding, with a clarity that felt physical, that the numbers did not work anymore.

I called my mother. I said "Mummy I need to come home for a while." She said "come now, what are you waiting for?" She said it so immediately and so completely without hesitation that I started crying on the phone which I had not expected to do.

I packed everything. I hired a small van. I drove back to the house I grew up in.&nbsp;My father was at the door. You already know what he said.

My father is a good man. I am saying this at the beginning of this section because what follows might make it difficult to believe and I need you to hold onto it.

He is loving. He is present. He drove four hours to help me move into my first apartment at 22 and stood in the empty living room looking proud in a way that made me want to cry. He is a good father. He is also a man who was correct about something seven years ago and has decided, now that the evidence has presented itself, that this correctness should be revisited regularly, thoroughly, and from multiple angles.

The first week I was home he asked about my job search every single day. Not aggressively, genuinely, with concern. But every day. At breakfast. At dinner. Sometimes at the point in the evening when I had just managed to stop thinking about it and was watching television in peace.

"Any responses today?" "Daddy I applied yesterday." "Hmm," he said, in a tone that contained several sentences he was choosing not to say out loud.

The second week he started forwarding me job listings. Not relevant ones, all of them. A teaching position in Abuja. A government role that required fifteen years of experience I did not have. Something in Kano that I could not fully understand the description of. Every morning my phone would have at least two forwarded listings and a WhatsApp message saying "did you see what I sent?" before I had even brushed my teeth.

The third week he had a dinner table conversation about a man he knew whose son had "tried the private sector" and eventually "come to his senses" and joined the civil service where he now had a pension and a car and stability. He told this story at length. He told it looking at nobody in particular which meant he was telling it at me.

I excused myself from the table. "Where are you going?" he asked. "Bathroom," I said.

I went to my bedroom and lay face down on the bed for twenty minutes.

The fourth week he came into my room, knocked first, always knocks, he is a good man, sat on the edge of my bed, and said: "I'm not trying to make you feel bad you know."

I said "I know Daddy." He said "I just want you to be okay." I said "I know." He said "Lagos is just very hard. I said it before you went. I'm not saying I told you so."

He patted my leg and left. I lay back down on the bed.

My mother decided within seventy two hours of my arrival that my situation was demonic.

Not circumstantial. Not economic. Not the result of a global pattern of corporate restructuring that affected thousands of people across multiple industries. Demonic. There was, in her assessment, a spiritual attack on my destiny and it required immediate and aggressive intervention.

I know this because I heard the conversation from my bedroom, not because I was eavesdropping but because my mother makes phone calls at a volume that suggests she believes the other person is in a different country and needs the sound to carry.

"Pastor, my daughter has come back. Yes. The one in Lagos. The job finished. Yes. I feel like there is something blocking her. Can we pray?"

They prayed on the phone for forty five minutes. I sat in my bedroom listening to my mother rebuke things on my behalf. I had not authorised this rebuking. It happened anyway.

The following Saturday she took me to a prayer meeting at a church I had never been to. I sat in a plastic chair for three hours while a man with a microphone that was too loud for the size of the room told me that my breakthrough was near. He said this with great confidence. I appreciated his confidence. My breakthrough did not appear that Saturday.

The following week she came to my room with a bottle of olive oil. She said Pastor had prayed over it. She said I should anoint my CV before sending applications.I looked at her. I looked at the olive oil. I looked at the CV on my laptop screen.

"Mummy," I said. "Just try it," she said.

I anointed my CV. I sent it. I did not get that particular job. My mother said the company was not where God wanted me and we moved on.

The month after that she signed me up for a full deliverance service without telling me until the day before. I found out because she put a new dress on my bed with a note that said "for tomorrow." I asked what was tomorrow. She said "deliverance, wear something comfortable."

The deliverance service lasted four hours. There was a significant amount of olive oil. There was a point where I was asked to throw away something that represented what was holding me back and I stood there genuinely uncertain what to throw because everything I owned was in boxes in my childhood bedroom and I did not want to throw any of it.

I threw a pen. It felt wrong but I was committed.

The women next to me were throwing shoes and photographs and one woman threw what appeared to be an entire handbag and I felt my offering was insufficient but it was too late.

My mother was satisfied. She came home glowing. She made pepper soup. She said "you'll see, things will start moving now."

Three weeks later I got a job interview. My mother has taken full credit for this and I have decided not to argue with her about it.

My Sister Who Watched Everything And Said Nothing

Chisom is 25 and she has always been, in the specific way of younger siblings who pay closer attention than anyone realises, my biggest audience.

She was twelve when I left for university. Fourteen when I got my first internship and called home excited and she grabbed the phone from my mother and asked me seventeen questions about Lagos. Eighteen when I got the job and moved into my first apartment and she told her friends about it, I know this because one of her friends told me at Christmas that year that Chisom talked about me constantly. That I was the person she told people about when she needed an example of something being possible.

I did not fully understand the weight of that at the time. I was busy being the person who had left and built the life. I did not think enough about what it meant to be the person who stayed and watched and held that life up as evidence of something.

Then I came back. With my bags and my depleted savings and my restructuring letter and my completely dismantled plan. Chisom, who had been telling people about me, who had been using me as her proof, who had been quietly carrying the story of her older sister who went to Lagos and figured it out, had to watch me unpack that story back into the childhood bedroom.

She did not say anything for weeks. Not cold, not hostile,&nbsp; just quiet in a way that was different from her usual quiet. She would be in the sitting room when I came out and she would look up and smile and go back to whatever she was doing. She ate dinner with us. She answered when spoken to. She was present and somehow completely unreachable at the same time.

I knew what the silence was about. I just did not know how to address it without making it worse. One night about three months in, I was in the kitchen making tea at a time that had no business being anyone's waking hour and Chisom came in for water. We stood there for a moment in the specific silence of two people who have been not-talking about something for long enough that the not-talking has its own texture.

Then she said, not looking at me, filling her glass: "I told Amaka you were back." Amaka was her friend. The one who had told me Chisom talked about me.

"What did she say?" I asked. "She asked if you were okay." She put the glass down. "I didn't know what to say." I looked at her. She was still not looking at me.

"Chisom," I said. "I'm not upset," she said immediately. Too immediately. "I know," I said. "But you're something."

She was quiet for a moment. Then she said, very quietly, the thing she had clearly been carrying for three months: "I used to tell people about you. Like, all the time. Like you were — I don't know. Like you were proof." "Proof of what?" "That it was possible. That leaving and building something and it actually working — that it was possible." She picked up her glass. "And now you're here."

I did not have an answer for that. I stood there in the kitchen at whatever ungodly hour it was and felt the full weight of having been someone's proof and then coming back with the proof looking like this.

"I'm still here," I said eventually. "I just came back for a bit."

She looked at me then. Really looked. And something in her face shifted, not resolved, not fixed, but slightly softer than it had been.

"I know," she said. "I just needed to say it."

She went back to her room. I stood in the kitchen for a while longer.

That conversation did not fix anything between us overnight but it named the thing and named things, in my experience, are always slightly easier to carry than unnamed ones.

By month six we were back to ourselves, sitting on the bedroom floor, talking too late, the way we used to before I left and became the person she told people about. Maybe better than before, actually. Because this time she was not talking to a version of me she had constructed from phone calls and Christmas visits. She was talking to the actual me, in the actual childhood bedroom, with no performance required from either of us. That, I think, was the unexpected gift of the whole humiliating experience.

It did not look like a montage. It did not look like a turning point. It looked like making my bed every morning in a room with 2009 curtains because it was the one thing I could control. It looked like getting up at 7AM even when there was nowhere to be, because the alternative was lying in bed until noon and letting my father find me there at lunch and having a conversation I could not survive.

It looked like sitting at the dinner table through the job listing conversations and the civil service anecdotes and choosing not to disappear because disappearing was starting to feel like a habit and habits that start in crisis have a way of staying after the crisis ends.

It looked like going to the prayer sessions. Anointing the CV. Throwing the pen at the deliverance service. Receiving love in the imperfect forms it was being offered because the perfect forms were not available and the imperfect ones were keeping me afloat.

It looked like long conversations with Chisom on the bedroom floor about what I actually wanted versus what I had been chasing because it looked like success from the outside. It looked like understanding, slowly and then more quickly, that I had built my entire sense of self-worth on evidence that could be taken away and that the rebuilding required finding something that could not.

There was no dramatic turning point. There was just the work, done daily, in a room with curtains nobody has replaced since 2009.

Eleven months. New job. Smaller apartment. More honest sense of myself than I had at 22 when I left the first time thinking I knew what I was doing.

My father helped me move. At the door of the new apartment he looked around, nodded slowly, and said "it's small." "It's mine," I said. He smiled. "I know," he said. "That's what matters."

My mother called that evening. She said Pastor had prayed for the new place and that I should anoint the door frame with the remaining olive oil she had sent with me. The olive oil is currently on my kitchen counter. I have not anointed anything yet. I am considering it.
