Every Nigerian wedding has that moment. The one where all the married women in the room gather around the bride with the energy of people who know something she does not and are deciding, collectively, how much of it to share. They smile. They say "marriage is beautiful." They say "just keep praying." They say "communication is key" with the specific vagueness of people who have whole stories they are choosing not to tell.

We went to married women, different ages, different years of marriage, different experiences, and asked them one question: what do you wish someone had told you before the wedding? Not the advice they give at bridal showers. The real stuff. The things that live between the lines of "communication is key" and "submit to your husband."

What came back was funny, occasionally alarming, deeply human, and more useful than anything anyone said at any bridal shower we have ever attended.

This was the answer that came up most often and surprised us most. Not loneliness as in being alone, loneliness as in being with someone and still feeling unseen. The specific, quiet loneliness of realising that marriage does not automatically mean being fully known by another person.

"Three weeks after my wedding I was crying in the bathroom and I could not even explain why. My husband was in the next room watching football. I felt so stupid. I kept thinking; I just had the wedding of my dreams, why am I on this bathroom floor? Nobody told me that was a thing that could happen."

"We would be in the same house all day and I would still feel alone. Not because he was doing anything wrong. Just because I had imagined marriage would feel like constant companionship and it does not always feel like that. Sometimes it feels like two people living parallel lives under the same roof and occasionally intersecting for dinner."

"I missed my friends so much the first year. I had not expected that. I thought marriage would fill everything up. It fills a lot of things. It does not fill everything."

Almost every woman we spoke to had something to say about finances. Almost none of them had been adequately prepared for what sharing money, or negotiating money, or arguing about money at 11PM on a Tuesday,&nbsp; would actually look like.

"We talked about money before we got married and I thought we were prepared. We were not prepared. We had talked about the concept of money. We had not talked about the fact that he thinks spending ₦500,000 on a night out with the boys is normal and I think it is reckless. That conversation happened in year two of our marriage. In a very loud way."

"He had debt. Not a small amount. I found out six months after the wedding because a creditor called my phone. We had talked about everything; where to live, how many children, his family, my family and somehow we never talked about that. Nobody told me to ask that specific question."

"I knew his mother was a lot. Everyone told me she was a lot. What nobody told me was exactly how much a lot she was going to be in our actual daily life. She calls him every morning. Every single morning. Before I get to say good morning to my own husband his mother has already spoken to him. I have been dealing with this for six years."

"The in-laws were described to me as 'they are easygoing, you will love them.' This was the most misleading information I received in my entire life. They are not easygoing. You Will Both Change. At Different Speeds.

Several women brought up something the marriage preparation conversation almost never covers, the fact that both people are still growing and those evolutions do not always happen in sync.

"He became very religious two years into our marriage. I was happy for him. I support his faith. What I was not prepared for was how much it would change our lifestyle, our conversations, what we watched, where we went, what we ate on certain days. I had not married that version of him and I had to decide if I wanted to."

"I went back to school in year three of our marriage. I became a completely different person. More ambitious, more confident, with a whole new sense of what I wanted my life to look like. He was supportive and it was still hard because the woman he married was quieter and less certain of herself. The new version of me took some adjusting for both of us."

"Nobody tells you that you will have to choose each other again. Not once. Multiple times. Because you will not be the same people you were on your wedding day and neither will they. And sometimes you choose each other easily and sometimes it is the hardest thing you have ever done."

This one came with a particular energy. The kind of energy that suggests it has been sitting somewhere for a long time waiting for someone to ask.

"I became the social secretary, the emotional manager, the family event coordinator, the person who remembers everyone's birthdays, the person who notices when something is wrong before it becomes a crisis. I did not interview for any of these positions. They were just quietly assigned to me because I am the wife."

"When he is stressed, I manage it. When I am stressed, I also manage it. That is the dynamic we somehow ended up in and it took me three years to even notice it was happening because I was too busy managing everything to step back and look at the pattern."

"His friends love me because I make sure they are fed when they come, I remember their wives' names, I ask about their children. His mother loves me because I call to check on her. His family loves me because I show up. All of this takes energy. Energy I am spending on people who are not me. Nobody talked to me about that before my wedding."

"I wish someone had told me that the first year is not the hardest year. People say the first year is the hardest and then it gets easier. For me year three was the hardest. Year three was when the honeymoon feeling was completely gone and we were just two people with different habits and different expectations trying to build a life and not always agreeing on what that life should look like."

Because this is not a horror story. Most of the women we spoke to, when asked whether they would do it again, said yes. Some immediately, some after a pause that told its own story, but yes.

"It is hard and I love it. Both of those things are true and I do not think people say that enough. They either make marriage sound like a fairytale or a prison sentence. It is neither. It is a whole complicated living thing that you have to tend to."

"My husband is my best friend. That is real. It took work to get there and there are still days where I want to relocate him to another country temporarily. But he is my person and I know it and that is not nothing."

"I wish someone had told me it was going to be okay. Not easy. Okay. Because on the hard days I thought something was fundamentally broken and it was not. It was just hard. There is a difference."

Marriage is not what the wedding looks like. It is not the dress, the hall, the coordinated asoebi, or the DJ who plays Essence at every reception regardless of what year it is. It is what happens after everyone goes home and you are left with another person, your shared finances, your incompatible habits, his mother's opinion about your jollof, and the daily work of choosing each other anyway.

The women who told us these things were not trying to discourage anyone. They told them because they wished someone had. Because the gap between what you expect marriage to be and what it actually is does not have to be as wide as it currently is. Because an honest conversation before the wedding is more useful than a hundred people saying "communication is key" without explaining what that actually means when you are both tired and it is 10PM and nobody has apologised yet.
