As much as I’d like to start this article with “omo”, I’ll do my best to refrain, but then again, omo. Ladies, this is no joking matter because these men literally identify as Yoruba demons, and I assure you that the demon in that phrase isn’t there just for the cruise because there are actual women out there with stories about our popularly known brothers, “the Yoruba demons”. I think the most infuriating part amongst everything is that these men are always on point in looks, outfits, intonation, composure, mystery and a touch of “steeze”. They are skilled in the ways of women; they know the right words to say, the right time to say those words, and the manner and tone. When it comes to women, these men are either blessed with wisdom, or there’s a special school they go to – I’m certain it’s the latter.

Sincerely, I don’t think it should come as a big surprise because even the devil is attractive, charming and quite knowledgeable in the Bible, so why they were given that title is understandable. They lure you in with their handsomeness, entice you with their mysterious aura, coerce you with their sweet words, and then shred your heart into pieces when you find yourself completely smitten. We all know that phrase “men will stain your white” Well, I believe that the woman who came up with it did so after meeting a Yoruba man because these men will literally soak your white dress in the mud. But get this: even with everything these men do, you’ll still find yourself missing Femi, you’ll realize that you’re still drawn to Yemi, and you’ll find yourself still wanting to text Ade. That’s the thing about demons; even with everything, sin still seems alluring.

The term “Yoruba demon” has been defined by Wikipedia as a slang for a young man, typically of Yoruba descent, who is often a smooth talker or a playboy. They know how to charm their way into a woman’s heart, make her believe that she’s the only one for him but sis, he’s probably telling three other ladies the same thing. Now, to avoid these men, you have to be able to spot them; the first thing you should know about a Yoruba man is that he’ll dress to kill. They are usually dressed in well-tailored senators, fila, classy wristwatches and shoes that’ll scream luxury and power. These men know the game, so they are never caught looking tattered. They keep up with their manly maintenance of properly groomed and trimmed beards, clean, low-cut fade with waves, trimmed and well-kept nails. They are usually highly articulated and sociable; you know those men that are usually greeted by every girl at an event, and when you ask them how they are well known, they’d likely tell you that everyone knows him, but he doesn’t even talk to people, or he doesn’t understand why because he’s usually low-key.

What you should understand is that Yoruba men are good with lies. They don’t have to think before a lie pops up in their heads, and because they can keep up with their lies, it’s difficult to catch them off guard. Women are always opening up about their experiences with Yoruba men, and among all these experiences, the most common trait is their sweet talking and lies.

I met Lekan around August 2022; we dated for a year, or rather, I thought we were dating, but I was dating myself all along. I met him at a wedding; he was looking well-dressed, a tall glass of hot chocolate, was gorgeously looking, and had a very calm, charming aura. We immediately hit it off, exchanged numbers and went on our first date shortly after. Lekan was the most charming man I had ever met; he complimented me every single chance he got, he made me feel good about myself, he’d always remind me how much I deserved everything good, he’d advise me on things concerning my job let’s just say he was perfect for me. I was never insecure around him; I trusted him wholeheartedly, even when I got a random message one Friday warning me to stay away from her man. I was shocked and confused, but my trust in him never seemed to waver. I approached him with the message, and he calmly explained that she was his obsessive ex, who couldn’t take no for an answer. I could see the worry and pain in his eyes when he spoke about how she had been verbally abusive towards him. He tried to cope with all the abuse, but it got worse along the line, and he decided he was done. She never accepted the breakup; she kept calling and texting. He eventually blocked her, but then she began texting any woman that he was seeing, threatening them, abusing them and warning them to stay away from him. He was worried that she would do the same to her, but I assured him I could take care of myself.

To cut the long story short, I eventually found out that he had been lying and that the lady was actually his main girlfriend, whom he had been with for over three years. I was one of his numerous side chicks, and apparently, he told his main girlfriend that we were the ones chasing after him. So, while Oga and I celebrated our first anniversary, he celebrated three years with another woman. It took a lot to move on from that relationship because I had put in everything, but it was fun while it lasted.

Regardless of this, there might actually be a sweet Yoruba man for you but then take into consideration that the tribe with one of the sweetest men in Nigeria is the Yoruba tribe. So ladies, save yourself the heartbreak and avoid that Yoruba man.
