Moghelingz, could you start by telling us a little about yourself?

Absolutely! My name is Banele Moghelingz Ndaba, and I'm a TikTok content creator from South Africa. I'm a proud queer individual, and I stand boldly in my queerness. My journey in TikTok content creation started in 2016, and I’ve been heavily driven by the comedic side of TikTok content creation. I experienced a significant breakthrough in 2020, during the COVID pandemic, when many turned to social media. Since then, I've been fortunate enough to contribute to and dominate the comedy space on various social media platforms. I use my platform not just for entertainment but also to advocate for queer visibility and rights.

Coming out as queer is a significant personal journey. How has this impacted your life both personally and as a TikTok content creator?

Coming out as a queer man was indeed a daunting experience, especially within my personal life. It wasn’t a smooth ride; it involved educating my family and close friends about what being queer means. However, on the professional side, my queerness became an integral part of who Moghelingz is. It resonated with a lot of young people who saw themselves in me and in my content. In many ways, coming out helped launch my career, and it has allowed me to stand out in the TikTok content creation space. My personal life has also evolved, with those around me taking the time to learn and understand this aspect of my identity.

Your content often explores the intersection of humor and social critique. How do you balance making your audience laugh while delivering pointed commentary on social issues? Can you share a specific instance where this balance was particularly challenging?

Humor, to me, is the highest form of intelligence. It’s a method of communication that can be both light-hearted and profound. I use humor to tell my story and address social issues, and I’ve found that it often resonates deeply with my audience. There hasn’t been a moment where I felt the need to overthink this balance—humor is just a natural part of how I communicate. I believe that those who understand the art of humor will get it, and those who don’t might not. But for me, it’s always about telling a story.

You mentioned using humor to share your story. Could you elaborate on what you mean by that? Is it related to your identity or something broader?

When I say I use humor to share my story, I’m referring to my life journey—everything from personal experiences to the societal issues that affect me. It’s not about materialism or seeking fame; it’s about communicating my journey through art. My audience, whom I consider my people, get to witness this journey with me. Whether it’s through comedy, dance, or any other medium, it’s all part of my story and how I connect with my audience.

South Africa’s history and diversity are complex. How do you navigate the potential for misinterpretation or backlash when incorporating these themes into your content, especially from audiences outside of South Africa?

That’s a great question. Comedy always walks a fine line between delivering a message and being misunderstood. It requires a certain level of emotional intelligence to appreciate the art of comedy. As a creator, I’m always mindful of where my boundaries lie. Social media is vast, and it’s normal for people to have different opinions on the content I create. However, I don’t stress about being misunderstood. If I’m wrong, I’m mature enough to acknowledge it and address it, but I always stay true to my message.

Creativity can be elusive, especially under the constant pressure to produce content. What strategies do you use to overcome creative blocks? Can you describe a moment when you felt creatively drained and how you managed to push through?

Being a TikTok content creator is far from easy. It’s a demanding job that takes a toll on your mental and physical health. Creative blocks are real, and I’ve experienced them multiple times. When I hit a block, I don’t fight it; I allow myself to go through it. It’s essential to recognize when your body and mind need rest. Once I’ve taken the time to recharge, I can return to creating content with renewed energy and passion.

How do you ensure that your content evolves over time without losing the essence that initially attracted your audience? Have you ever had to make a difficult decision to change your content style or direction?

Social media is constantly evolving, and as a creator, you have to evolve with it. I’ve had to make strategic decisions to diversify my content streams, whether through makeup, dance, or other forms of storytelling. It’s about amplifying your art and staying relevant while staying true to the core of what made you successful in the first place.

With a growing platform, you're exposed to diverse opinions and criticisms. How do you differentiate between constructive feedback and negativity? Can you share an experience where audience feedback significantly impacted your content or you as a person?

Social media is full of different voices, and it takes emotional intelligence to navigate through them. I’ve learned to differentiate between constructive feedback and negativity. While I don’t receive much hate on my platforms, when I do, I don’t let it bother me. I believe that the more you entertain negativity, the more it grows. Instead, I focus on the positive feedback and continue to grow from there.

As a TikTok content creator in South Africa, what systemic challenges do you think are most prevalent in the local digital content space? How do you use your platform to advocate for change?

One of the biggest challenges for South African TikTok content creators is the lack of resources. We’ve made significant impacts in arts and culture, but we still need more recognition and support from the government. I use my platform to highlight these issues and advocate for better resources and opportunities for creators. Social media is a 24/7 job, and creators deserve to be recognized and compensated for their work.
